Dear Forumites - Onwards I Go

Dear Forumites

For some time now I have turned to this forum for support in dark moments. In moments where I felt that there was no hope and that my mental health was taking its toll on me. This much is still true and I think those moments were hard. Sharing them however, in amongst a community of people with the same experiences taught me a lot. It was tremendously helpful for me to find this forum supportive.

Well today I have a few good pieces of news to share.

Today I was formally offered a new job. This is with the same organisation i interviewed for back earlier in the year. They kept my details. They rang me again and then I interviewed again. I have been offered this job. The reason I feel good about it is quite simple - it's something I could see myself doing. It isn't just "a job" but it is a "my job". I think this is a big difference. I wish I got it sooner, but I realised that this was motivated by my attitude towards my old colleagues just gone. As much as I would like to say to them all "That I have a new job now" it would be motivated by ill intent. This would be wrong. I don't see why I need to boast to people with whom I had no interest in keeping in touch with. I have grown from this.

Yesterday I told my psychiatrist where I had been and what I had been up to - I had not seen him since March. I explained to him that I had a whole job between seeing him last time and yesterday.
He told me that I had come a long way since seeing him first. And for once this actually felt like it wasa true thing.

I guess I just wanted to say thanks to the forumites who have supported me.

Hello @RedHorse

I read your post on the the "Worry Room .... " thread. Really, I do not expect a response, unless or until you actually feel like it might be helpful to talk about where you are at.

While I have recently been able to talk about positive progress in my life, I am coming from a long way back and still have a long way to go. Much of what you describe, I can identify with and associate with in my own situation. That includes the similarity in the way that we might describe our respective living spaces.

If you feel like doing so, you can click on my forum address here, @HenryX , to have a look at various comments that I have posted about my own situation and responses to others. I can say that it's been a hard slog, but I am making progress. A lot of the momentum has come from my activity on the forum, both in what I have received in support, nurturing and companionship and what I have offered, that I hope may, in some ways, have been useful for others.

I have used the forum as a foundation on which to place expectations on myself as well as goals. Sometimes I have felt more able to give and sometimes I have gratefully accepted the supports offered by other companions on the forum.

The forum has become a place where I have found a capacity for expression that I never knew that I had. I am now over 70, so it is never too late. I certainly hope that you accomplish more and sooner than I have. However, I begrudge no-one the opportunity for "self actualisation", in whatever form that takes, sooner than later.

I hope that we will be able to talk more as, if and when you feel more comfortable doing so.

With Best Wishes

@HenryX
