Topic Tuesday // Body Image and Eating Disorders // Tues 28th September, 7:00-8:30PM AEST

Hey SANE community!

This fortnight we will be welcoming one of SANE's Peer Ambassadors talking about their experiences with eating disorders and body image, leading on from Body Image and Eating Disorders Awareness Week (BIEDAW) earlier this month.

Body Image and Eating Disorders Awareness Week (BIEDAW)

BIEDAW is a national week to raise awareness of body image concerns and eating disorders, celebrated annually from the 6-12th of September. It calls upon the community to acknowledge that all bodies are important, and all bodies deserve politeness, honour and care from ourselves and from others; particularly in spaces where people are affected by eating disorders.

For this Topic Tuesday, we are making space for those of us who have struggled with body image and eating disorders, and to share experiences, resources and stories.

This discussion might help to enhance our understanding of this year’s theme “Respecting All Bodies” and and support you to have conversations around body image and eating disorders with those in your lives and find an ally.

Please join us here on Tuesday the 28th of September 2021 from 7:00pm-8:30pm AEST to follow this conversation.

Yes @Erica5 . That was very hard for me too. I hated myself because I felt I was 'fixing' one part of me yet destroying another.

@SarahBee Question 5: During these times of change, we have seen lots of people struggling with body image during lockdown. What have been some of the challenges you have seen?

It’s been a very challenging time, especially for people experiencing body image concerns and eating disorders. We've already had some discussion on the impacts of lockdown tonight!

One of the main challenges I have seen with people is increased preoccupation with food and body image because we are spending more time at home with limited things to do in our day. More time to ourselves, less distractions and disrupted routines can result in more critical thinking. We are also on Zoom (online meetings) a lot more too so maybe people are spending more time looking at themselves and picking out all their perceived ‘flaws’.

Our usual routines are also interrupted – maybe we aren’t moving our body as much and this has resulted in body changes, people may be impacted by that too. I know my body has definitely changed over the last 18 or so months.

very much so @BPDSurvivor

I think we are headed for a pretty pathetic society if we value people solely on what they look like

We never know what someone's story is - I long for the day when we can live free of such pettiness.

My sister has several medical conditions and has put on a lot of weight. While the two of us have the opposite side of the experience with regard to weight and body image, I believe the core issue at the beginning is the same - self worth as a condition of body image

It sounds like side effects from medication is something so many of us have experienced, especially related to weight gain or suppression of appetite. It's a big challenge

Along with my ED I have recently had surgery which has stopped from exercising. This is having a major impact on my mental health at the moment. Exercise was my 'release' so not having this is making me depressed quite quickly.

I can say that even the risk of weight gain would not be sufficient to make me stop taking "anti dep medt'n" because I am aware that the adverse effect of dose reduction is sufficient to cause me to maintain compliance.

It is interesting to note how many find that eating disorders overlap with other MH issues, and that often a triage like decision is taken on dealing with those issues. Often weight issues, higher or lower than desired, seem to be placed lower down the list of priorities.
