Psychotic depression

Psychotic depression

I hope it's okay to talk about this - I don't want to freak anyone out. I'm just wondering what psychotic depression is like. I'm wondering if I have it. Something happened that triggered me tonight and I'm in a really weird headspace. It feels like I have smoked too much marijuana (though I haven't smoked any marijuana for over 25 years).

I'm not having suicidal or harmful thoughts; I'm just feeling really weird. It feels like severe trauma.

I called Lifeline and the woman I spoke to was helpful. She helped me to understand my trauma about my dad. I'm usually hesitant to call helplines because I've had bad experiences with them in the past, but I was (am still in) such a bad way.

I don't want to alarm anyone and I hope I'm not saying anything in breach of the guidelines, but boy do I feel weird.

Sorry, what I'm trying to say is, I'm wondering if I have psychotic depression.

PS I have an appointment with my therapist on Sunday night.

Re: Psychotic depression

I spoke to the man at the psychiatric service (who called me about my assessment for PARC) and he doesn't think I have psychotic depression.

Good morning @Arizona

I just saw your post and your update. I'm pleased that you got some advice and support.

I have been through psychotic episodes in the past. It's a break with reality. I was very unwell each time, non-verbal usually. I lost touch with the ability to think normally/how I am usually. It's not easy to explain. What happens for me is that I get caught up totally with delusional or false thoughts. My mind races with those delusions.

It did start with feeling weird, like being too stoned. Partly as I used to get anxiety and paranoia from marijuana and my psychoses were largely around paranoid thinking.

If you continue to feel odd, I suggest you write down what's happening. Your thoughts and feelings. Also, now, while you are ok, list for yourself what stuff usually helps you, like self care activities, helpline numbers and your support network.

This way, if anything gets weirder, you can do stuff from your list to help.

Re: Psychotic depression

Thank you @Former-Member . This is very helpful The man at the psychiatric service said he didn't think I had psychotic depression because I wouldn't be aware of it and I wouldn't be asking about it.

I have experienced hallucinations (visual and auditory) before but they were very mild and not very long lasting. They happened at a time of great stress in my life.

I will talk to him about it when I see him.

Re: Psychotic depression

I had clinical depression for many years, probably not too different to psychotic depression.

A dark place to be, I can identify. Take care.
