Growing out your natural, grey hair

Growing out your natural, grey hair

Hello friends,

Is anyone else here growing out their natural grey hair, on purpose, after years of colouring it?

I have been growing out my natural, grey hair for the past six months, since the 1st of February.

I had some blonde highlights done over six months ago, but the colour didn't suit me and they damaged my hair. So I decided to grow out my natural, grey hair.

I had long hair past my shoulders and I had about two thirds of it cut off. I did this initially to help grow out my grey hair, but then I realised that I really like my hair cut and I have decided to keep it like this.

I had been colouring my hair for years and it never even occurred to me to have my own natural hair colour.

My hair is probably about 25% grey (mostly around my temples). I first noticed some grey hairs when I was 23.

It makes me really happy that I'm growing out my natural, grey hair. For me it's about being myself, accepting myself as I am and being authentic.

I had very low self esteem when I was younger and for many years my life was about needing other people's approval.

In the past six months I have also been taking very good care of my hair. I have a hair care routine that includes...

Brushing my hair twice a day.

Using good quality brushes.

Washing my hair with salon quality shampoo and conditioner twice a week*.

Putting a treatment in my hair four times a week.

Drying my hair with an ionic and ceramic hair dryer.

The only thing I haven't done is buy a water filter for the shower. But I'm going to do this when I move.

*I only wash my hair twice a week because I want to restore the natural oils in my hair (after it was damaged).

Hi @Arizona ,

it sounds great. Go natural I agree. It also sounds like you are doing all the right things, looking after your hair well. You just have to be patient . I been growing my hair out from very very short, it is now below my ears and the layers are almost gone I get it trimmed regularly so it looks in good condition. I don’t have lots of grey. But I love it and will not colour it... persist. I bet it looks great

I am not there yet, waiting to get grey, BUT made a promise to myself a long time ago, once is gray, I will stop dying it.
However, I shaved it 8months ago and decided to keep it short. I had long hair all my life. I find it refreshing not having to worry about shampoo, conditioner, oil drops, etc... Or the time required to have my hair done, now I am ready to go in a few seconds.

@Arizona

I died my hair from when I was 25 (first few greys) to when I was 50 (8 years ago)

Now my hair is a beautiful silver colour and I love it more than I've ever liked my hair in my whole life. It suits my complexion better than any other colour I've ever died my hair - blonde, black, auburn, pink, turquoise......

Silver is the best.
