Too much is happening

Too much is happening

Hi everyone,

I'm new to this and quite frankly am not the type of person who easily reaches out for help, as it's quite difficult for me to admit I'm drowning. I have been enduring through a lot lately and it's just too much.

A little bit of background on me. I've uprooted my life and made a lot of sacrifices for my significant other, including an international move from a life I loved and a job I loved. This was almost ten years ago. Upon arriving to Australia, we lived in an extremely regional town and coming from a very busy place, it was quite the adjustment for me. But, it was the sacrifice I made to be with my partner. After a year, I was diagnosed with a chronic disease which I was able to cope with as I felt okay with the rest of my life for that period. Little did I know that for five and a half years of my life living in Australia, I was going to experience severe loneliness and the inability to make friends as my significant others job required several relocations. Finally we settled in a town and through my job, eventually I did make a few friends and had finally started to feel settled after five years. We then decided it was time to have a child. It was a very happy time and I really felt so fulfilled and a high level of life satisfaction. Over the course of my child's babyhood, I met some beautiful people and had really started to feel great and settled after six years. I was growing my friendships with these people, going out and actually having my own life outside of our relationship. I decided to quit the career I had for ten years and change direction in my life. My partner was very supportive and I was excited about something for the first time in a long time. I felt empowered and was so excited as where we lived, my new business was just going to take off.

Fast forward to the beginning of this year and it has literally all gone to hell. My partner decided he was no longer satisfied in his job because he couldn't climb the corporate ladder to a more powerful position. So, he again asked me to sacrifice my entire life and uproot my life again for him. Relocate six hours away so he could have satisfaction in his job, even though it meant me sacrificing my new business. I chose to endure yet again. During the time my partner decided this, I started to develop some other health issues but I tried to ignore them as they were not severe.

However, this move was a lot more complicated and the new health issues that were manifesting ended up to be way more serious than predicted. Additionally, right before our move, I lost a pet I had for 15 years. This was extremely devastating for me and I believe after this it has just been a train off the tracks.

The move was okay as we were lucky enough for my partner's job to pay for the relocation. However, us relocating required to live in a rental for several months then buy a house and then move again, all in the course of four months. Being the stay at home parent, I bared the brunt of unpacking and organising our house on top of our child's reaction to the first move because of my partner's long work hours. I tried my best to stay positive even though our child was lashing out extremely. He was biting , hitting and not sleeping. My partner didn't see any of this because he spent an hour and a half with our child and then I put him to sleep. I am the one to wake in the night with my child because of my partner's work schedule. All the while, my partner was not exactly helpful, making comments that were not exactly okay in my.opinion. For instance, oh he slept through last night, you must feel great; reality, our child did not sleep through that night and was up a lot more than he was asleep. But yet, I continued to endure ensuring the house was clean, meals were cooked, and his cup was being filled. I became very overwhelmed and my health issues began to decline rapidly. I ended up in the ER twice and the doctors could not figure out what was wrong. I lived in constant pain and just continued to try to keep my head above water.

Prior to our relocation, my partner promised we would not buy a house that was old and required a lot of renovations and maintenance. We both agreed to either buy new or build. I was tasked with looking for houses and we found a few new builds but unfortunately they'd all go under contract prior to us putting an offer in. My partner then told me to go have a look at a house and I was not crazy about it. The floors needed A LOT of work, and by a lot I mean your foot is almost falling through some floorboards. I reported back to him but he decided to go for a tour on his own to have a look. He then returns home saying it's his dream home and he can't imagine living anywhere else. Again, here I am making a sacrifice because I want my partner to be happy and I'm thinking it will eventually grow on me and I'll make it a home. So we move in and relocate yet again. After a week of living in the house, he starts complaining about all the things wrong with it. Constant complaining about the work that's required to maintain the house, all the things we need to do, etc. I begin having extreme feelings of resentment because hang on, I thought this was your dream home and you just couldn't live without it. So on top of all this, I'm living and trying to cope with extreme incessant bodily pain. I've just been diagnosed with a rare form of arthritis due to my chronic disease.

Every day is a struggle and every day I simply feel I can't cope. I feel as if 2021 has not been at all positive. I haven't seen my family, whom I'm extremely close with and had been lucky enough to see at least once a year, since before Covid. I realise I made the choice to move away from my family in the first place, but I would have never imagined I wouldn't see my family for this long of a period of time.

The weight of everything has broken me down and I no longer feel joy. I try my best to keep a smile on my face for my child, but lately that is not even manageable. I no longer have the strength to be a mother and a wife. I no longer feel satisfaction in my marriage or in being a mother.

Has anyone experienced these feelings before? Did you find your way out of it? Did you need meds to get yourself out of this hole, or did you find therapy to be beneficial? I realise it's up to me to dig myself out of this hole but I just don't know where to start. Thank you in advance, and thank you for reading this war and peace of a novel.

Re: Too much is happening

wow just wow @Tryingmybest1 firstly Im amazed at what youve had to keep Adjusting to over the years it seems like so much ,so many layers of things that have piled up for you and Isolation from Family during COVID and even before then thats really tough and it seems unfortunetly that though your Partner has at times been supportive of you and your goals it sounds like things have become very one sided in your homelife so your the one bearing the brunt of lingering health issues as a result which isnt at all ok ,your Partner should be so gratefull of your sacrifices for them and all the hard work youve put in,it seems your partner is refusing to acknowlede all the things youve done for them, this also seems very unfair as I believe sorry if it sounds out of line to talk like this but I believe the sacrifices should be equally shared and not just on one person all the time please stay strong strong for your child and know that you have support on here,Im Listening please take care and get all the supports that you rightly deserve, youve been through alot you should be praised for all the efforts youve done and still do for your family your Friend LostAngel

Hi @Tryingmybest1

First I would like to welcome you to the forum and assure you that you are welcome - and well done for reaching out. It's really okay to do that even if it's unusual to do this

It's really not okay to make all the sacrifices for your partner the way you have - I understand you were doing your best for your relationship but when it's give, give, give all the time on your part it's very wearing and it seems as if he doesn't understand how much you have given and how need and miss some stability

I don't know what you need to do about it at the stage but for your sake and the relationship and of course your child - there needs to be some understanding - conversation, agreement - from both of you - not just your accepting anything and everything that happens. And of course you miss your family - COVID as stuffed up life for everyone but that is no reason at all for you to consider that your sorrow isn't a lot for you to endure -

Have you considered couples-counselling - this doesn't always work because both parties need to be in it for it to work - perhaps if you have an understanding GP that's a place to start

I understand how lonely you are - in uneven relationships one partner has to endure a lot while the other's "cup has to be full" - I really do understand this

Re: Too much is happening

Hi Dec, thanks for your reply. When discussing this, I am normally gaslighted and told I made the decision too and agreed to everything so it shouldn't be a problem. If I point out something I'm shutdown or again gaslighted and told it's my fault for agreeing etc. My side is never really respected or taken into account. He'll tell me all the things he does for me so I should just turn the other cheek for all the problems I have. Couples counseling has been brought up by me many a times but excuses are always made. I do not want to break up my child's family and unfortunately if we did split up, I would be just as isolated unless I returned to the town we used to live in. But, my son would need stability and go to the same school so I would have to remain where we are currently located. I just need a way to get myself in more of a right mind to continue to endure like I have before. Normally my outlet was exercise but I no longer have that option due to my arthritis. I guess my next step is my GP and to go from there, thanks for your input.

Hello @Tryingmybest1 and welcome❣️

I am not in a place where I can add anything at present but I wanted to let you know I see and hear you. I agree with @Owlunar about not always being the one to compromise.

I'm really sorry you find yourself in the position you are. I wish I could add more.

Sending you love ❣️

Re: Too much is happening

I understand @Tryingmybest1

I'm divorced and I have been for over 30 years - however I stayed in my marriage for a lot longer than I wanted to for my daughter's sake - which might have been good for her but rough on me

But we can't change the past

It's not easy to start again - your child is young enough to start again - could you move nearer your own family to give him support and continuity? - It's up to you

Gaslighting and being told to believe what's not the truth is not a good scene.

My marriage was sad rather than bad. It wasn't good though - we were not living as husband and wife. He wasn't a good provider either. I told my daughter I had been working at two jobs during the last years - she hadn't realised that - I have never told her that I did that to provide for her education and give her those extras all kids really need socially. She did well. It was rough though and if your arthritis makes it hard to exercise then that is something I have too - it is very painful - I know.

Yes - talk it over with your GP - it would seem already that your partner has been manipulative and couple's counselling is unlikely to help. I went to marriage counselling alone for years - some relationships take a lot more than a change of attitude - I hear you

And I wish you the best

Dec

Re: Too much is happening

Hi @Owlunar ,

Thanks again for the reply. Unfortunately moving closer to my family is not an option as they live on the other side of the world. I don't think couple's counseling is an option either. I'll visit my GP and see what options I have. I'm not sure therapy for myself will be the solution either as it won't make my husband change.

Thanks so much again.

Re: Too much is happening

@Tryingmybest1 - so sorry to read of your distressing situation. Your screen name says it all. I can't offer any advice. You just need time to sort things out for yourself. No-one knows your situation better than you. You'll make the best decision, but don't let it wear you down any more or your health will suffer even more.

I'm truly sorry you are going through so much. You are clearly a very considerate partner and mother. Respect yourself for that and take care, @Tryingmybest1.
