Topic Tuesday // Grief and Loss // Tues 3rd August, 7:00-8:30PM AEST

Hi SANE Community,

This fortnight we welcome Griefline as our special guests for a Topic Tuesday on Grief and Loss. Griefline support Australians experiencing grief, offering support through their helpline and online community.

Grief and Loss:

Grief is a natural response to the loss of something or someone important to us. At some point in our lives, every person will experience grief and loss in some way.

While we all experience loss and grief, the emotional and physical pain when we lose something or someone we love will be felt differently from person to person, and often from loss to loss.

This Topic Tuesday will hold space for us to discuss the grief and loss we have felt in our lives, how we have coped and what we can do to support a loved one who might be experiencing grief.

Please join us here on Tuesday the 3rd of August 2021 from 7:00pm-8:30pm AEST to follow this conversation.

Thanks for being here @Adge I think you've raised a really good point around memory, and that exisiting PTSD can impact the way we remember loved ones. For each person, memory will look different and it may be the case we can remember a lot or not remember a lot.

I was always amazed by the periods of time in life I still can't remember with grief and before grief, and have learnt over time that it's okay for my experience with memory to be different to other loved ones and friends.

I'm so sorry to hear how painful it has been to not have those memories So many heavy things on your shoulders right now- we are always here to listen

Hi @Owlunar , that is a very powerful response to the loss of your son and so heart-warming to know that he gave you such a precious gift. If there's one thing death can't take away from you it's the bond you had with him. That can never be broken.

I love that you have focused on your strengths in dealing with your grief - the fact that you never abandoned him. We use strengths-based grief work a lot at Griefline.

Aw @Zoe7 - 26 - that's young - and exactly 4 months after your Nan - that is not a fun coincidence

What helped me get through my grief was journaling. Being able to write out my thoughts and feeling was very helpful to me. I also found connecting with family, friends and pets helpful during my times of grief.

Its also been important for me to practice self care and look after myself through going for walks, eating well, practicing mindfulness and making sure i am getting enough sleep. This can be difficult to do when experiencing grief but, in my opinion, is very important.

Strength-based grief work is something I would like to learn about - not here tonight - but I will follow it up. @amandaGL

And you are right - death can never take my son's gift away from me - it took a long time to find - had I pushed my grief away I would never have found that - and it's pretty wonderful - I believe I am able to give of myself to other people because of it - and this is worthwhile

@Former-Member It is also importsnt to 'go through' the grief and allow yourself the time and space to feel it - whether that be cry or do nothing for a time.

Be gentle with yourself. Put yourself into ‘emotional intensive care’… reach out to your support network and take any credible resource that’s on offer (like Griefline). Lean on others as much as you can. You don’t have to go through this alone.

From a personal perspective try to look after yourself by eating well, getting a good amount of sleep, exercising avoiding maladaptive behaviours (drinking, drugs etc). You need to be as strong in mind and body as you can be to withstand this.

Some go-to coping strategies are;

  • Journaling – keep a track of your grief every day, what triggers it, what eases it. Helps to understand your unique grief response and adapt your life accordingly.
  • Continuing bonds can be really therapeutic – your loved one may have died but the bond doesn’t have to. Create a ‘shrine’ in your home with photos/mementoes etc, or wear a piece of their jewellery/favourite sweater – one lady even put her lenses into her husband’s reading glasses so he was always with her.
  • Writing letters to your loved one, even responding in the way you think they would have can help to give you guidance.
  • Creating legacies – planting a garden, starting a fundraiser, lobbying to change a law so that their death wasn’t in vain.
  • Mindfulness – we have a Smiling Minds recording on our website. Helps quiet the mind and re-centre us when it all gets too overwhelming

I really love this list of coping strategies @amandaGL, especially around continuing bonds!

Coping for me includes:

  • Talking about my loved ones with others who knew them and hearing the stories
  • Taking "me time" - sometimes that's away from others where I can be with my feelings
  • Sleep hygiene
  • Keeping up my exercise
  • Photos and memories
  • Creating a ritual for anniversaries
