How to live with absence

How to live with absence

My son, now 28, lives with untreated (as far as I know from 3-4 years ago) paranoid schizophrenia.

About 2 years ago after a range of accusations he asked me to no longer contact him. I knew he was abt to move house too, and already was not seeing him much as I live in town and he was in the country. He had previously cut all ties with his father who I am separated from. So the possibility he would do the same to me was already concerning me.

He resurfaced last May, unannounced. I spotted him and partner in my back yard. The interaction was awkward, I was startled to see them, it was dark and frankly I think I was afraid. I was not allowed to ask questions. He made some statements that did not make much sense to me. Then left.
This at least let me know he was alive and still with his partner who also has cut ties with family. But really, no closure nor openings.

I also wonder how often he has maybe come around without me knowing and that is a bit spooky to be honest.

I suppose that this estrangement happens to other carers and would love to hear how they cope or if, for some, it got resolved somehow.

Thank you

Hello @Krishna @Elac

Thinking of you both..

I was unable to get out into the garden yesterday as it rained non stop..

This morning I just did not want to get up..

Today the sun is out and I have to move myself to get out there as I did not get out of bed until 10am...very late for me.

Have done some domestic stuff..blech..

dusting still needs to be done..

will be there tomorrow..

I have a moth orchid which the flowers dropped off of not much after it was given to me..

Not a plant that I would buy myself..a gift so lovely..

I have stuck it in a corner inside where there is a very high window so indirect light...the kettle is in there so humidity..

close the door and well have new shoots..

needs repotting...is very rootbound..I am frightened to touch it!

It was first in the bathroom...everyone told me oh just stick it in there...leave it water it once a week in summer..

Hmmm

I also want to repot some new growth...small succulents...never done before...

Which part of your gardens are you enjoying most?

I am lovely the flowering irises...flowering cosmos shooting up everywhere..flowering hollyhocks...snapdragon...

much more..

take care

here is some sunshine for you

💛

Re: How to live with absence

Thinking of you too @Sophia1 . Would love to stay in bed until 10 as often feel the need too but headspace won't allow it. I really must start having some more compassion for myself and allow such moments to just be. Big storm last night so most of my beautiful Iris have been battered. My brocollini, spinach and kale is finishing and am sorry to see them go but have served us well over Winter. Now picking broad beans and garlic is showing signs of flowering so will pull and store in the coming weeks. Still headaching today so just pottering around slowly but did allow myself an afternoon nap. Love to just sit in the garden this time of year and watch the myriad of birds doing their thing and enjoying the space as much as I do. Sending love and wishes for a relaxed evening. We had a blackout last night and was lovely to just sit with candle light and a can of soup heated up on the gas camping stove. Should turn off the lights more often and just relax in the ambient light of candles and silence. Hoping you're okay my friend xx

Re: How to live with absence

hi, thank you for the book reference, I will look it up. I have not seen my son now for over 5 years. I totally understand the heartache. How are things now with your daughter, any change? I joined this group yesterday hopefully to find other mothers in this position who understand.

Re: How to live with absence

Hello @Krishna @Elac @JennyM

I have learnt to live with absence by being absent myself.

I have withdrawn from most people in my life.

I have needed the space to find me.

Work in progress.

Short on words.

Just wanted to let you all know that I am thinking of you.

This time of year is even more difficult which seems an impossibility.

Take care

Sophia

Re: How to live with absence

Hi @Sophia1 Still living with absence Sophia and yes I too have withdrawn from so many or visa versa. Either way just focusing on myself, husband and son. I do receive the occasional call from my girl wanting money. No conversation just demands which usually results in her swearing at me and hanging up. I was looking back over our past messages and it was a lovely time sharing with you all those years back. Thank you. May 2025 be one of peace, harmony, self care, living of life and good health 🙏

Re: How to live with absence

Hello Krishna,

thank you for such kind words

There are few who I feel understand the pain

Many think that because that our loved ones are absent that the caring role is over

That our suffering is not as intense as theirs

So many compete in everything in this world even pain and suffering.

Unbelievable.

We are all unique and have our own unique experiences, responses. emotions and so much more.

Could not be further from the truth that our caring role is over. It will be with us until our last breath.

I

Never let go of the love you have for them from birth. no matter how hurt and angry you feel.

Forgive yourself and let go.. So very hard. Then they can come back when and if they can.

Whatever happens life chooses what happens to us and we have to try to work through what has not worked and try something else.

We have to look after ourselves first and foremost though.

This is where I made a huge mistake.

I was lost in my grief and pain and enduring love.

The outcome will be different for each of us but I believe that the common factor for all of us is love.

Hope that I have not hurt anyone.

I am no expert.

(have had to edit as have huge trust issues - yesterday first day back on here in ages. trauma retriggered by someone I do not even know who decided to attack my response on a post where I was trying to explain that we do not know another person's story and not to judge.

Well literally they might have been triggered and their unkind response triggered me.

It has been explained to me that they do not realise when they lash out in defence.

I can see some truth in this.

I felt so unsafe again and overwhelmed.

I will only be writing on one thread from now on.)

Please look after yourself and remind yourself of the love you had before.

Mental illness can change people and with some people they are not really aware of how they are reacting or what they are expressing. Some do not even remember.

Some people are not nice regardless of mental illness. You know your own child though. That does not sound the case here.

Remind yourself that it is the illness or lasting results that is controlling his behaviour.

I hope that helps take away some of the pain.

It is so easy to question ourselves at times. It certainly has been for me.

The mental health system does not help either and that also builds a wall between our loved one and ourselves. This they often remember most and blame us.

Hope that this has not upset you more. I seem to be good at doing that sometimes.

Perhaps I say too much as I feel the pain so strongly for others too.

Look after your heart and yourself.

Same with you @Elac if you are reading this.

I just find it helps to write my truth.

If my words upset you perhaps stop reading and do not reply.

My health has been impacted greatly and I try to get through each day as a new one.

I practise living in the now.

Prolongued chronic trauma, loss and grief get in the way of this in particular when retriggered.

Look after the purity in your hearts.

Sophia
