BPD SH Risk

BPD SH Risk

Lately when feeling intense emotions I have immediately wanted to SH. I haven't done that for years and am scared that I might turn to it again in order to cope. I need to find better and healthier ways to cope with things but I don't know what would work. Any ideas???

Re: BPD SH Risk

Hi @Oaktree , you could try a breathing exercise called the "voo" sound for releasing trauma by Peter Levine. I have been doing it and it helps to get rid of my anxiety.

Peter Levine is a psychologist who has been specialising in trauma for over 30 years. I recently finished listening to his audio book called "Healing Trauma". I found it very helpful. I think his ideas are groundbreaking and they will change the way we look at and treat mental illness.

Here is a link to the "voo" sound video (this person isn't Peter Levine but I think it's the best demonstration of how to do it):

Hi @Arizona ,

I love Peter Levine's stuff. He has done great work in his field. Great resources that you shared.

Thanks,

Hi @Oaktree , have you tried knitting while listening to audiobooks? My childhood trauma hit me over the head a few months ago and I knitted, breathed and listened my way through it. I listened to audiobooks on loving kindness.

Hi @Oaktree,

Just wanted to check back in and see how you are going? There have been a few suggestions here, do any of them resonate with you?

There was a great thread that was started on the Friends Family and Carers forum called Coping Toolbox ( what is in yours to help you cope ). I used to run peer support groups that actually made a box of sensory things to put in there to help when you are feeling distressed. Things like tea, chocolate, strong mints, knitting, a cue to listen to music, art, soft toys, stimming toys (eg fidget spinners) or anything that you find helpful to cope with strong emotions. Have you done something like that before?

Hi @Daisydreamer @Gwynn @Former-Member @Arizona

Firstly thank you for all your suggestions. @Daisydreamer I do actually have a sensory box that I made at a distress tolerance group but in the heat of the moment I don't think to take it down off the shelf. I will be checking out the Levine technique though. Hopefully that can help me.

Re: BPD SH Risk

@Oaktree No healthy coping strategies to suggest sorry. Just wanted to let you know I hear you, still struggle with those thoughts myself. I book in for a new tattoo if I start obsessing about it too much. Don't know if that's helpful at all.
