IDAHOBIT Week Long Discussion

What is IDAHOBIT?

Monday the 17th of May is IDAHOBIT (International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia and Transphobia).

IDAHOBIT was first celebrated 31 years ago when the World Health Organisation (WHO) removed homosexuality from the Classifications of Diseases and Related Health Problems.

Across the globe, IDAHOBIT raises awareness of the discrimination faced by LGBTQIA+ people and creates a space for discussion about LGBTQIA+ rights by celebrating and elevating the voices of people in the community! This year in Australia, IDAHOBIT is supporting the work of Minus 18 who are working to change the lives of LGBTQIA+ Youth.

There is still work we have to do to create a more inclusive society, and this week we will be supporting and raising up the voices of our LGBTQIA+ Community here at SANE.

How will we be celebrating IDAHOBIT on the forums?

We are holding a week long discussion to highlight the voices of our LGBTQIA+ community at SANE, celebrate pride and to raise awareness of the issues that the community continue to face.

Each weekday from the 14th-25th of May 2021, we will be posting a new question in the morning to this discussion for the community to share their thoughts on.

How can you get involved?

There are tons of ways to show your support and get involved:

  1. Check back in each morning to see the new question and post your response.
  2. If you see a response that you resonate with, click the โ€œsupportโ€ button to show you are listening
  3. Tag members who you feel might be interested to contribute to the discussion
  4. Share resources that you have found helpful or that might be educational for those reading along

What other events are happening for IDAHOBIT?

If you want to get involved with some of the other activities happening across the world on IDAHOBIT Day, you can also check out the IDAHOBIT website. Some examples include signing a pledge, joining in workplace or community based events, or having conversations with the loved ones in your life. For resources on how to make the most of IDAHOBIT Day, check out the website above.

Re: ๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€๐ŸŒˆ IDAHOBIT: Week long discussion ๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€๐ŸŒˆ

For those who are part of the LGBTQIA+ community, how do you think someone could be a good ally?

For those who are an ally, what do you think it means to be a good ally?

I really love this question. Allyship is so important as the more people who advocate within the broader community, the more oppurtunities there are for change - and that's how real progress happens.

For me, a big thing is to show curiosity. However, I think it's really important for allys not to expect a LGBTIQA+ person to educate them on everything. There are plenty of resources out there and what makes me feel really supported is when someone comes to me, with curiosity around something they have found/researched/learnt themselves. It helps me feel accepted and cared for and like I am worth the time it takes to go and explore things themselves.

There are some really great points here around allyship ๐Ÿ’œ

I found his infographic that has some good suggestions too:

The one that stood out for me is around being visible and supporting the community- this includes calling out instances of discrimination or stigmatising language when we hear it.

Today's question:

How can we use LGBTQIA+ inclusive language?

I came across this resource sharing how we can all use LGBTQIA+ inclusive language that I would like to share with everyone
A few key things in this resource that stood out for me were:

  • Don't make assumptions about someone's gender, sexuality, or relationship
  • Use words and phrases such as 'parent' and 'partner'
  • Asking people what pronoun they use instead of asking what pronoun they prefer

Hi @Daisydreamer

educate educate educate and speak up. I personally feel more comfortable sending feedbacks on forms, facilities etc as it gives me some distance. Occasionally I will stand up for other people, as I'm not out myself it depends on the situation.

Good morning everyone here @Shaz51 @Daisydreamer @petrichor @Former-Member @Former-Member @Former-Member @NatureLover @Former-Member @Sophie1 @Appleblossom @Jynx @wellwellwellnez @outlander @The-red-centaur Hoping I haven't missed anyone.

Wow what a fantastic way to acknowledge IDAHOBIT day. It's really great to see all the people in this discussion being their authentic selves and accepting each other across the spectrum of LGBTQIA2+ realities. And the wonderful questions that have been talked about. Typical of me in recent times to just make it in at the end - at least I didn't miss it completely.

This year I had the pleasure of being with my transgender non-binary adult child and their family on the actual day. I identify as pan/bisexual too so the day means a lot to us. They live interstate and I didn't take my laptop with me, hence missing most of this discussion. I could talk at length about so many aspects of being a parent/grandparent of non-binary individuals, but have to try to catch up in other areas of the forums too this morning. I'll definitely check back in a bit.

Hoping there's another question today and I can join the chat in response to it.
