Topic Tuesday // Trauma and Recovery// Blue Knot Foundation // Tues 23rd February 2021, 8:00-9:00PM AEDT

Hello to our wonderful Lived Experience forum members and readers 👋

This month we are excited to welcome the President of the Blue Knot Foundation, Cathy Kezelman, as our special guest for Topic Tuesday Live Chat Event on the topic of Trauma. Blue Knot are national leaders in supporting and empowering people who are recovering and healing after complex trauma.

Topic Tuesday will look a bit different this month as we are hosting two discussions back-to-back on the forums with the Blue Knot Foundation.

How will it work?

🔹 From 7:00-8:00pm AEDT, we will start the discussion in the Friends, Family and Carers forum talking on the topic of Understanding Trauma and Supporting Loved Ones (use this link to join the discussion!).

🔹
From 8:00-9:00pm AEDT the conversation will continue here in the Lived Experience Forum talking about Trauma and Recovery.

Trauma and Recovery

Recovery and healing after complex trauma is a personal journey and looks different for each person. The SANE forums community holds a space where many stories of trauma and recovery are shared, including the journeys of each person who is coping with the impact of trauma. This discussion will focus on the impact of trauma for survivors, recovery after trauma, finding trauma informed support services.

Earlier this month we put out a call for questions on the topic of trauma contributing to the planning of this event. We want to extend a huge thank you to the many members who posted questions for this live event- we have done our best to combine key themes and questions! 💙

Please join us here on Tuesday the 23rd of February 2021 from 8:00pm-9:00pm AEDT to follow this conversation.

I'm new here - what is this?

The event runs from 7:00 - 8.00pm AEDT on the 23rd of February in the Friends, Family and Carers forum, and then continues here in the Lived Experience Forum from 8:00 - 9:00pm AEDT. You are welcome to join for one or both of these discussions. Each month we focus on a different topic with the session facilitated by a Community Manager or Moderator, and joined by a Peer Support Worker.

The first post of the thread (this one) will give you an idea of what the topic is and what will be covered.

How do I get involved?

Our text-based event takes place right here! As it is text-based, no software is needed. During the session, to keep up with the latest posts hit the 'refresh' button on your browser for the newest comments (it doesn't automatically update). Keep an eye out for page numbers at the top & bottom of the page, and jump to the highest page number for the most recent post. We recommend using a desktop computer or laptop for the event for overall ease of use .

Throughout the session, the facilitator will post questions for the guest to answer, and you can provide your answer too. Usually the questions will ask for your own experience on the topic. To contribute to the event, just hit the 'reply' button and share your thoughts. No answers are right or wrong, and everyone is welcome to get involved!

Question 1: There are lots of different types of trauma events, triggers and factors that contribute to how trauma affects our lives. How do we know what traumatic events will impact us?

It’s not so much about thinking about what traumatic events impact us. It is about becoming aware of how we are in the present in terms of our wellbeing, mental and physical health. It is about understanding trauma and the stress response, and understanding how trauma repeatedly activates this response, often meaning that the person stays in an agitated or shut down state or moves between them.

The stress or survival response – fight, flight and freeze enables us to respond to daily stress. When the stress becomes more pervasive and overwhelms the person as happens with trauma, the person can find it hard to get back to a state of calm. Even when a person is shut down their nervous system may still be on overdrive. This helps to explain why the person reacts to triggers, or finds it hard to manage their strong emotions, and fluctuating levels of arousal. It is about understanding ourselves and that these are normal responses to abnormal events i.e. trauma

Thanks @Daisydreamer @Former-Member @Cathyblueknot

As explained on the carers side, I am diagnosed with complex ptsd, resulting from complex trauma.

I am feeling pretty fragile tonight, but will follow along as best I can. If I have to leave, I will come back and read at another time.

Hi @Emelia8 and @destructive, 100% okay if you need to step away! Your wellbeing is the most important thing here, the conversation will still be here for another day if you want to check Cathy's answers at a later time

I was diagnosed with Complex PTSD & complex trauma.

All of my siblings have trauma (I am the oldest of 5) - Yet they do not wish to recognise their trauma.

I'm the only one (of 5) who has been formally diagnosed with complex ptsd.

I never feel like the psych's understand how the seemingly little things all link up to make me feel unsafe and unsupported etc. It has caused me great problems because I don't/ won't fit their image of 'getting better'.

Even here, right now, I am too concerned ab out how my questions would be recieved and who I might upset to ask what I really want to know.
