Help - please

Help - please

'm a newbie at this and I've logged on and off this site trying to put together the right words asking for help or for advice. I guess it seems like a simple question - but how do you help your boyfriend/girlfriend or partner cope with their depression? My boyfriend and I have been together for a year but he's depression is worsening. To the point of self harm and isn't ashamed to admit that he can commit suicide to prove to those who don't think he can 😪😭 (which was just yesterday. Worst experience I've been through) . It also seems like we clash heads constantly and he doesn't want to hear certain things that I have to say, he just wants to hear what he wants to. I don't know.. It gets to a point where it becomes draining physically and mentally - for the both of us.I feel stuck and I have no say. So Is it wrong to just do what he says rather than compromise?

Hi @newbee1,

Thanks for your post - we're sorry to hear about what's going for both you and your boyfriend. It seems like you are both having a pretty tough time at the moment!

I’m wondering, is your boyfriend accessing any professional support for his depression? If he is self-harming and talking about suicide, then it is definitely time to get mental health services involved to try and get him some support.

There are number of ways to do this, but given the situation, maybe the best thing to do might be to give the mental health triage service in your state a call.

If you want to chat more about how to go about accessing support, you’re welcome to give us a call here at the Help Centre on 1800 18 SANE (7263) Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

All the best,
supernova.
