Fact vs Fiction

Fact vs Fiction

Lately I've been having trouble deciphering between what is really happening and what I think is happening. Does anybody else struggle with this? For example, I am convinced that I am doing a terrible job at work even though they have just asked me to stay another two months. Another example is that I truly believe my bestfriend is giving up on me, but I know that can't be true.
Does anyone have any methods they use if/when this happens? I'm struggling and can't seem to get out of this headspace

Re: Fact vs Fiction

@Bec3. Do you normally have negative self talk going on? I've had to retrain my brain to stop talking about myself like this. When did I realise I had a problem with this? When I realised I wouldn't let anyone speak to my son, or mum or best friend like I talked to myself.
Do you have a psychologist? They will be able to help you with this. If you don't have a psychologist, your gp can organise a referral to one under medicare.
What are your strengths? What are you good at? Maybe by focusing on your positives, your thoughts will be clearer.
I wish you all the best

Re: Fact vs Fiction

I guess the only way I know to deal with it is .. with reality testing. If there is an outside or objective part ... like your employer .. who thinks you are worth hanging on to ... or if you have past runs on the board.

Self doubt and putting oneself down .. can be habitual ... sometimes it might be honest ... eg if I make a mistake on the piano when teaching ... admit it and get on with it ..

Take care and try not to panic about it @Bec3 @utopia seems to have lots of good ideas .. but then she is a professional ...

Re: Fact vs Fiction

Hi utopia,

Not good today- seem to be a lot worse than yesterday. Not really sure what to do from here. I had to leave work early because i was having a "mental meltdown". I am going back to the doctors tomorrow because I'm worried

Re: Fact vs Fiction

@Bec3. I'm glad that you have an appointment with your gp tomorrow. Be as open and honest as you can be with your gp. Get the dr to do a mental health plan - just simple questions on a form. Then your gp can refer you to a psychologist. You can get theseappointments uunder medicare.
So now we need to help you through tonight.
Sometimes when my emotions are too overwhelming, I need to keep my hands busy for a while - knitting, hand sewing, sudoku puzzles. After a while I'm not even aware or thinking about my emotions because I've concentrated on something else. Sometimes I put my music on and dance. Totally free dancing. Until I get exhausted. This can also help me to get some sleep. Others on this site like walking - but too cold where I live at the moment.
I'm glad you were able to leave work when you did today. Sometimes it's too hard to keep pushing through and you need time out. It's good you did that today. Your gp may be able to write you up a medical certificate for a few days off work. To give you a bit of time just for you.
If things get too hard or suicidal thoughts come to mind - please ph life line or 000 straight away. I've been there & those thoughts were scary - so I got help straight away.
In the meantime, what sort of things could you do tonight to distract yourself and feel yourself and feel calmer?
Do you like art or crafts? What's your favorite music? Do you have a pet you can stroke or cuddle?
Keep talking to us here. I'm generally up til midnight and am happy to talk about anything you want.

Re: Fact vs Fiction

I've just now got off the phone with beyondblue. Everything has become so overwhelming and i think it's because my main support group are not available (bestfriend busy, mum overseas, counselor on long service leave). I keep trying to tell myself to stop relying on others and to deal with things myself but i just feel very alone. My way of relaxing is to talk whatever I'm thinking out (even if it is mostly jibberish) or to watch something funny- none of which has helped tonight

Re: Fact vs Fiction

That is so hard @Bec3 when your normal support networks aren't available. Please don't feel like you have to do this alone. I wouldn't be on my way to good mental health without the help of my gp and therapists. I've also had some really good help from people on this site, especially when having a hard day or week & I was between appointments with my psychologist.
Do you have a psychiatrist? Maybe they could assist with some talking therapy while you therapist is on leave.
Well done for being pro active by calling beyond blue. Ph them as many times as you need.
I find I need a good laugh often. None on the tele tonight unfortunately where I live.
I can talk under water. Not sure if you are the same. Do you keep a journal? Do you think it may help to write down how you're coping today - so you can show your gp and therapist (when back from leave)
