Something’s not right

empath / crying

empath / crying

hi all. new poster here. i'm 47 and have a happy family life. my health has always been relatively bad, I suffer with numerous chronic conditions, they are managed just fine but i do get tired. I work and am generally a happy person. quite early in my life i lost several family members including my dad and there has been some other trauma.

i cry in movies, the news, when i see beauty, when my students do nice things, when i hug my kids, i cry all the time. i am not sad. i cry when good things happen. i am just getting so sick of all the crying, i just can't figure out why i can't seem to hold back the tears. my husband and daughter seem to be able to choose when they cry, but myself and my son - well the tears just can't be held back. I am not ashamed of crying but it happens in the worst times, at work, at the supermarket. I can't help thinking I have repressed hurt from all fo the things that happened when I was young.

I'd like to know if there is some kind of CBT that I can try to stop this. I have tried pinching myself, tapping, hypnotherapy and all sorts of other things. I just can't shake the tears. Even when my niece sings and plays guitar, I'm crying, when my kids perform on stage, I'm crying.

I'm so sick of it. HELP.

Re: empath / crying

@meticulous Thanks for sharing you story, I have been through this in the past and it seems like it is an unresolved feeling from the past, I'm not a psychologist or a expert in this area, but I lived through something very similar. Have you been to a psychologist or counsellors before and if so ask about CBT, it was life changing for me, today I am a different person all together? If not speak to your G.P about what is happening with you and ask about a referral the a psychologist or counsellor. Best of luck meticlous, you are not alone and keep connected, because there is always hope.

Warm Regards

@meticulous

I completely get you because I am an empath/highly sesnitive myself. I totally get it and it is so incredibly difficult being an empath in this world. I am not going to suggest therapy evn though that is what you requested. For sure, look into CBT because that may also be really benefical for you. I am also going to suggest two books that I found extremely helfpful. One I have sitting on my bookshelf, the other I do not and should!

First book is The highly sensitive person by Elaine Aron. You can google this, loads of info on the book and Elaine.

The second book is Assertiveness for Earth Angels by Doreen Virtue. This is quite a spiritual book but also very very grounded/practical at the same time. No airy fairy stuff. However, this book may not work for you.

You can look into both of them and decide if anything of them may be right for you.

I still battle and I can truly say I understand.

Wishing you all the best.
