Gday everyone,

I'm not much of a talker but am hoping to contribute and learn from all of you lovely people. I'm 37 male and live in W.a.

bit of background on myself- when I think about it I have had depression and anxiety for along time. Apparently diagnosed with adhd as a youngster talking to my mother today. First medication was at 24 after a bad breakup prior to that I seemed to be able to control my feelings without meds. I think a fair bit of that was self medicated with alcohol though and just thought it was reasonably normal at that age.

seemed to soldier on through not your tipical happy Chappy but made it work with more alcohol of course.

about four months ago had a big drinking secion with friends and ended up getting assaulted, in the days following had some terrible panic attacks/ anxiety attacks and the old black dog and anxiety has got me in a bad place. During that four months I have improved a couple of times but have found myself back at my worst. Am currently seeing a psychologist and the doc has changed my meds believing the old ones have become resistant. Can't help thinking negatively at the moment and have that constant feeling that it won't improve and nobody can help me.

thanks for listening and wish you all the very best

Re: New member

@Trytorelax welcome to the group.

All I can say is give this time. Time it takes which it will. Things don't get better overnight. I'm not sure about the assault, the why, the what, BUT I have been assaulted three times in my life. Strangers. The last time it had it affected me more than the other two times. It does take time. The panic attacks and the anxiety are a normal response to this event.

I'm glad you are seeing a therapist and I'm hoping the medication prove to be useful while you are dealing with recent events.

I leave my assaults behind me, but even in daily life when I'm out, if anything of a violent nature is happening around me, I get away fast. You do learn to feel.safe in your environment again. As I said time. Avoiding the areas where it happened is useful, well was for me. Until It was able to get stronger and heal from what happened.

I hope thus help. I'm from W.A. too.

Hi @Trytorelax

I just wanted to reach out and welcome you to the forums! It’s great to have you here

I’m so sorry to hear that you were recently assaulted and I think that it’s completely understandable that you’re experiencing panic, anxiety and depression

Sometimes when life is turned upside down and we can’t seem to escape from the chaos of our thoughts and emotions, it can seem inconceivable that anyone can help us to find our way through the darkness.

This was something that I really struggled with too and although change didn’t happen overnight, it did happen.

I can really understand how right now, you may not be able to hold onto any hope that change is possible and so I’ll hold this for you. I truly believe that you can and will find your way through this

I think that it’s great that you’re attending appointments with a Psychologist! This is such a brave and healthy step towards being able to receive the care and support that you need and deserve at this very difficult time

I also wondered if accessing some additional support through the Sane Help Centre may be helpful for you? Basically, qualified counsellors provide telephone and online counselling, information and referrals for people living with complex mental health issues and also for the people who care about them.

The Help Centre operates Monday to Friday from 10.00am until 10.00 pm (AEST) and you can contact them on: 1800 18 7263.

Their website is: www.sane.org

I hope this helps you a little and remember that you’re always welcome to continue to reach out here.

Take care,

ShiningStar
