What are your FAQs?

What are your FAQs?

Go any burning questions about mental illness or get asked the same questions all the time?

We're creating a new section on our website featuring answers to your most pressing questions. So we’d love to know:

  • What people frequently ask you about your mental illness?
  • What questions kept you up at night when you were new to the world of mental illness?

Leave your questions below. The top five frequently asked questions on the forums and through SANE Facebook page will be answered by a panel of carers, Help Centre advisors and people with lived experience.

NB: This is not a discussion for you to get answers for your question - so if you have a pressing question - please start a new discussion so the community can offer their suggestions, advice and support

Re: What are your FAQs?

Initially when I was first carer of my ex I desperately wanted to find someone who was going through the same as I was but that was impossible to find. Then when diagnosed initially with BPD I really wanted to find others going through the same. After my DPD diagnosis I was desperate to talk to someone experiencing it, now recently with my teenagers showing signs of depression I've wanted to connect with others a bit too. I now realise this forum can be that but I think it would help to know what direct support groups are available. I guess the less well known diagnosis being my ex’s and DPD it is so extremely isolating because you feel so alone and can't find much to connect with which leaves you feeling like more of a freak. Not sure how to word this in a question rather than 'where can I find support from others experiencing the same things as me?'

Re: What are your FAQs?

Questions asked of me are:
* Aren't you better yet?
*Why aren't you working / volunteering for sports / community groups?

What I would like to see is:
*Positive recovery stories & how they did it
*Positive coping & living a good life while having a MI

Re: What are your FAQs?

I am asked:
Why can't you remember/recall/recount your acute experience?

Why did you/do you self harm?

How can I/we help? (Usually followed with silencing or ignorance I'm afraid, but have had some genuine interest and offers of late!)

Other than that I'm not asked much. Usually people make statements, rather than ask. They assume. They dictate.
----------

Things that kept me awake:

My pursuit of pixie freedom. Bounces between reality and delusion were so conflicting and made me question how genuine I was. Did I bring this upon myself? Did I choose this? Am I a victim? What happened to me? Am I right? Am I wrong?

All I had was questions, dulled by my self harm (which can be more than what people assume, you know. Starvation, throwing myself against things, hitting myself, when really distressed the focus is my head.) I didn't have any answers. Any at all.

I have a different set of questions now I have been well for some time, and have finally accepted I was unwell and not in control of that.

I want to know, who will help me if I spiral acute?
How do I not spend 5+ years digging out of it?
Who would take care of my family?
Will I lose my family?
What happens when I get old and have no super?

Am I actually just as alone and scared as ever?
