Voices giving me the irrits today

Voices giving me the irrits today

My voices are really giving me the irrits today. I am trying to complete an assignment for my diploma and all I hear is mindless chatter, laughter and commentary. I've got to keep going with this assignment though even though it is difficult to focus.

Grrr! Anybody got any tips? I was going to put on some music that I like to try and drown them out, but I find listening to music while studying distracting.

I'm feeling very grumpy 😞

Hi @Queenie,

we've not met, but Hi!

I find listening to my favourite tv shows or a podcast is the best. That way it is more voices and I find they can all blur into one and I can tune the nasty ones out. For some reason music just annoys me.

Don't know if it will help, but I hope your uni work goes okay!

Dear Queenie. Can I ask if the voices are more prevalent when you're overly tired or extra busy. Perhaps keep note of when the voices are their loudest and try to do your assignments around these times. Some people who suffer schizophrenia find the voices loudest in the morning, some the afternoon, some early evening. Are you taking AD's to help control your sickness. Perhaps the voices are only distracting if and when you're studying. If this is the case, the voices are more controlling and you need coping strategies. If you are seeing a psychiatrist/counsellor/therapist, perhaps have a talk with him/her about strategies to help with the study.

Re: Voices giving me the irrits today

@pip - The voices are pretty constant all day and sometimes have been known to wake me during the night (thankfully now I take medication to ensure a good night's sleep). I find when I am concentrating on something though, they are a distraction as I generally like a quiet environment to do things like study. I do take antipsychotics but after a while, they lose their efficacy and don't work as well.

I spoke to my psychiatrist aabout this recently (this week) and his response was to increase medication. Not exactly the response I was hoping for as medication often leaves me feeling drowsy and unmotivated. I might run this question by my voice hearer's group (I co-facilitate) and see what ideas they might have too.

Any advice is good advice! 🙂

Does white noise help? Like rain sounds etc? It must be so difficult. I can only study or read in complete silence

@Princessmolly that's a good idea, I hadn't thought of that. I'll give it a try. 🙂
