Is there such a thing as mental illness - Stephen Molyneux

Is there such a thing as mental illness - Stephen Molyneux

He is more polemical about the issues that I personally would be ... but I think it is relevant to a thread discussion that "Something's not right" and it might not just be with the clients, consumer, patients or vulnerable people.

Edited - I left out the dotcom

it might work now

Just researched more and there is some talk that he is set up as a cult figure ... so I certainly dont want to encourage indulging that.

Still he is a historian and comes from that angle ... I learned something anyway.

You made me really laugh out loud with that first post. @Former-Member

It might be my fault .. I am hopeless with links and stuff..I will check out.

It is about the pandemic in MI and raises a valid epidemiological question - why are the populations getting sicker if the knowledge base and medicines re MI are getting better??? or are they?

He starts out by talking about the REALITY of angst and agony ... but is trying to put some of the numbers out ... of diagnoses and of pharma .. and it is scary the rate of increase .. I havent checked his figures ... but half of the amount he says .. is still scary.

I am not competely sure where I stand all this. I have been thinking about it since I was 10 and first went to Mont Park to visit dad.

First I have to survive and get my kid a life.

I think this site (SANE) is a really good idea.

It has good people on it ... members mainly ... it is important to reassure and calm people ... and I dont want to agitate anyone .. but I dont think it ethical or wise to be blind about the hidden costs of pharmaceutical solutions ... they dont seem to be solutions UNLESS combined with psychotherapy .. I dont have a barrow to push re which one .. take your pick ... but as a proud ex heroin user ... I may have an upside down version of morals but do not want to lead vulnerable people blindly down a path of over medication ...

It has me intrigued @Apple blossom. Is the article presenting an over medicated society? I.e: topping up what's not right or working?
I believe psychiatry is there to 'stabilise' with psychotherapy 'to talk'.
I'm interested too in how many people don't medicate but work with their MI in other ways.
I guess it's a horses for courses. Everyone copes uniquely. That's definitely a given 😊.

Re: Is there such a thing as mental illness - Stephen Molyneux

Yes ... I had felt that for a long time, but was still shocked at the statistics.

Also the efficacy of the meds .... ????

I am not hearing about enough psychiatrists who are doing psychotherapy as well as meds. There needs to be a bigger expectation that they do some training and work on their bed-side manner ...

It is not enough to fob the psychotherapy on to psychologists ... and pretend they are Lords of alchemy ... There are a few who care about progress of their patients and PRACTISE THERAPEUTIC MODALITIES, but I have been looking really hard for some in my city ... and it is a big city.

Generally, their sessions are too short and their compassion too short and their scripts too long.

Horses for courses is the line I was fed 20 years a go .. but the problem with relying on that model too heavily ... isnt that there is not a sufficient feedback loop ... and thus accoun tability is low ... as we can tell by the stories on this site.

Australia should not follow the US, or our MH workers naively think that have the more advanced techniques, drugs etc.

Maybe I should have applied for that RANZCP community position, but I was just not ready to take them head on.

I would like to know the level of investigation that occurs after a suicide. I have been researching inquests etc... I was only 11 when my dad had his inquest .. so was not informed aware or vocal at the time.

Maybe we can have a Royal Commission into the suicide epidemic. Get some better protocols in place.

Re: Is there such a thing as mental illness - Stephen Molyneux

Hi @Former-Member, @Appleblossom, @Former-Member,

I personally don't believe that mental illness is on the increase, but who knows? I think it is just being diagnosed at greater levels because people are being encouraged to seek medical help now, whereas in the past, plenty of people would not admit they were having distressing symptoms.

I think it's become a self-perpetuating cycle now.... more people are seeking help, and doctors are becoming better educated in MI issues. Less people are falling through the cracks and also less people are prepared to accept anything less than an amazingly happy life....

Our standards of living have gone up... but our overall happiness has not, leaving plenty of people wanting more... more fulfilment, more satisfaction, more happiness and more of everything, really. When life doesn't deliver us huge amount of satisfaction, it does tend to leave the door open to depression..... I think people's mind-sets are changing a bit.

Yes, I do personally believe that anti-depressants might be being over-prescribed. They are cheaper and easier than long-term therapy and in a lot of cases, they get results. I think that given a choice, many patients would prefer to pop a pill rather than have to talk about their problems. Because as far as many of them are concerned, their only problem is that they feel depressed! It's a catch 22 situation.

It could possibly be that experiencing long-term sadness could lead to a change in brain chemistry, rather than the other way around. But the people who manufacture all the pills would have us believe that adverse changes in brain chemistry 'just happen' and that the cause of these changes is not understood. So the solution is to pop a pill and get the brain chemistry back to where is should be. Then everything is supposedly going to be rosy!

The underlying sadness will still be there, as soon as you stop taking the pills. Because that sadness has, in many cases, not been examined. Or only superficially examined. Let's face it, therapy leaves many patients bewildered.... because it has been incomplete and inadequate.

Re: Is there such a thing as mental illness - Stephen Molyneux

Yes, I think it's difficult when I can only draw on my own experience. I didn't find meds, long term helped me, if anything it was dangerous. Most people I find around me view medication for the crazy people. But then those that self medicate with alcohol or party drugs are ok...because that's acceptable. Can be boxed into a slot nicely. I just had a coffee the other day with a friend, (our sons play together). She mentioned another mother and her son at school. This boy said his mum was crazy to my friend to test her reaction to this. It dawned on me the lack of empathy society has. I don't know this mother struggling, nor my friend too well, but you probably get my drift...it made me sad, in that already a stigma was being created of this mother & child. I tend not to involve myself in gossip circles for a reason. I think with light comes dark. Plunging through the dark is our challenge.

Life is tough and when we are struggling but it is "helpful" or a good 'reality check" to see broader contexts.

See I am not sure that less people are falling through the cracks ... but I may just have been unlucky. My sibs fell through .. it has honestly taken me too long to get help .. so I fell through

We even fell through the cracks in the home schooling at dept of ed.

at least I do get a sense of birds coming home to roost .. or connecting to the dhamma ...

Sorry getting personal when this was an ideas thread.

I am finally tired ... need to go to bed ... worried about @Former-Member Take care
