Self confidence self distructing my relationship

Self confidence self distructing my relationship

Three years ago my 9 year relationship with my ex husband and father of my son came to a horrible end. Things hadn't been ideal for a while but I was willing to try and make things work for us and my son. My ex met someone else and rather than telling me he had he made life at home unbearable so I would leave. This included daily verbal abuse and towards the end physical abuse. The last time he was physical towards me I ended up bruised and bloody so I left.... I never reported out of fear (I was a stay at home
Mum studying part time). I was happy the relationship ended but never dealt with the abuse mentally. I indulged in unhealthy habits when my son was at his fathers - drinking too much, sleeping with men too much. The next man I entered into a relationship with ended up cheating on me as well. My self esteem was at an all time low when I met my current partner. He is everything I want in a man. He's handsome, sweet and smart. He's also great with my son. A year into our relationship I was on cloud nine, conversations about moving in together began and I felt like karma was in my favour. I had questioned him about old photos he had of his ex fiancé one night out at dinner and then asked if he still spoke to her. He said no and I left it at that - knowing he was acting strange. That weekend he left me at his house to finish watching a documentary on his computer while he went out. I got curious and noticed he'd left his emails open. I searched the name of his ex and found a large amount of emails between the two. Now they had spilt up 5 years ago and she was engaged to be married. The bulk of the conversations were harmless although he still lied about talking to her. But the most recent conversations the last was a week before were very hurtful to me. He had commented on her latest Facebook profile picture and said she looked "cute" she then replied that he looked happy in his (which was with me) to which he replied "I'm not sure I am". The conversation then went into saying how much they both missed each other and wished they could still see each other. I was heartbroken and was ready to end the relationship then and there. He deleted her from all social media connections and then wrote her an email which he let me see saying I'd seen the emails and it was time to go their separate ways and not
Contact each other in anyway as I was hurt my the emails. It took weeks for me to decide to give things another go but I believed he deserves a second chance. He is a good man and has done all he can to try and build my confidence in myself and our relationship back. I do love him. Since then we have been on two overseas holidays and had many good times but it's nine months later and I still can't help but feel that those conversations happened because he really does miss her and how can I be enough if that's the case. She is very beautiful and must of been a nice person to of been with him. I know that im not horrible looking but not as beautiful as her. I know I'm a good mum and I'm well educated i look after sick people as a job. I know I'm a good person and deserve to be happy but I cannot for the life of me shake my insecurities. I've been depressed post my marriage break down and now suffer from anxiety so bad that I've come
Close to taking my own life. I just don't know how to build my self confidence back again...... I just want to be happy. Not sure what I'm asking but I feel so sad about myself so much. Sorry for the long post

Re: Self confidence self distructing my relationship

Hello @MC84, I'm glad you found us here in the Forums. Welcome. You write very well and I can hear the pain you're experiencing. It's also a very relatable story. It's so hard to trust when you have been hurt in these ways. But without trust - willingly wearing your heart outside of your body - there can be no relationship.

It sounds like you've truly found a good match. Someone who chose to be with your rather than pursue contact with his ex-partner. Who put you first. Someone you'd regret losing if you are unable to trust again. So, finding a way to put your heart back out there is important. Which is pretty much what your post is all about 🙂 Knowing you need to but finding it so very hard.

The confidence that you need is not that you are better than her. But that you'll be okay no matter what happens. I'm no Buddhist but their philosophy of non-attachment is really pertinent here. They believe that you can't attach your happiness and well-being to a particular outcome. You need to know within yourself that you'll be okay no matter what.

Maybe for you that could come from looking back and realising that you have been okay. Even when you gave your heart and it was trampled on, you survived. It was very painful but you're still here. With a man you describe as 'handsome, sweet and smart' who wants to be with you. You made it through that to a better place. And no matter what happens from now you can keep doing that. You've proven it to yourself.

Could you feel confident in that? And think about letting your heart live outside your body again. It's worth it as the alternative is to keep it safe but to live without love.

Hope this makes sense 🙂

Oh, and very importantly, it's time to get some help MC84 if taking your life seems like an option. Is there someone to talk to? Perhaps a GP? If you are able to share some of this with them you can get a referal for a Psychologist and receive some much needed support and assistance. Lifeline are a good option too when your thoughts turn in this direction. Their number is 13 11 14.

Re: Self confidence self distructing my relationship

Dear MC 84. I would say when you read those emails, when he sent them, he was at the crossroads. Since then, he has decided it's you he wants. He wrote her, telling her to end it. Let you see the email before sending it. I realize you're suspicious, but you decided to give him the benefit of the doubt. From what you say, you have a good relationship with someone who wants you and only you. It's possible he did miss what he had with her, he was engaged. Do you know who broke the engagement. Perhaps it was a mutual decision, based on them wanting different things. Whatever the reason, accept he's 100% yours. Maybe you should try telling him you fear he still misses her. Perhaps by bringing it out into the open, you can get a better picture of why they separated. You had such a traumatic life and marriage, you need to tell him why you fear losing him. Beauty is something we never see in ourselves. People tell me I'm beautiful, I don't see myself as such, but beauty comes from within. He sees something in you that really pleases him, accept your best qualities, warmth, love, caring. I would say he sees you as beautiful, to him. To look after sick people requires patience, tolerance, understanding. These are qualities he sees and wants to have in his life.

Re: Self confidence self distructing my relationship

Wow Thank you so much for the reply. I have seeked professional help in the past and do know it's something I should do but finding that time seems impossible..... I have spoken to close friends also however I've not been always completely honest as trying to not completely rubbish my partners reputation. My friends are very protective over me due to past events and can be extremely quick to judge. I know I would regret losing my partner if I can't get over these feelings however some days the noise in my head becomes too much and I think I'm better off alone or not here at all. If it wasn't for my son I do beleive I wouldn't be here. I am my harshest critic and know my insecurities are the biggest thing holding me back. I guess I need to talk to a professional

Re: Self confidence self distructing my relationship

Thank you for the reply. I have told him I fear he misses her and shouldn't if he is with me. He explained that he misses that time when he was still studying and life was more carefree then stressful careers and mortgages etc etc. the relationship broke down because she changed and started hanging out with people he didn't like and he has said he can't be sure but believes she may have been seeing someone else... So why risk a relationship with someone (me) for someone that may of been doing the wrong thing by him.....
