Dear Miss_S. Medication unfortunately does have that unpleasant side effect. There are ways of controlling it, though. With any medication weight gain is also an unpleasant side effect. Exercise can be beneficial, but you need to be in the right place emotionally. Try drinking water more. The water will help flush the impurities from the medication. You may find you urinate more frequently, however, after a few days, this eases. Try taking yourself for a walk, either morning or afternoon. Running isn't a good idea as you tend to gain more weight through muscle build-up. Water will also give you a 'fuller' feeling, where coke or other fizzy drinks tend to make you more thirsty. See if you can obtain a proper diet regime from your Dr or ask for a referral to a dietician.

Re: Meds and weight gain

Hi again @Miss_S,

Yup, I've gained 20kg on meds over the years. It sucks, but when you get on the right meds, stablise and get better you can think about eating right and getting some exercise.

I found I've come to accept my 'new' weight, when I was younger it really upset me, but now I've changed my thoughts and my weight doesn't impact my self worth or who I am as a person. Although, it does make my doctor nag me a bit too much!

I've also found a little bit of exercise is really helpful for mental health, I'm too scared to join a gym at the moment as I'm so unfit, but I've been swimming and going for walks recently. I've also been doing some strength/conditioning at home - sit ups, puch ups etc and I have found I feel better being a bit stronger.

Don't let the weight gain upset you- it happens to all of us and it's a sad price of getting well again. You CAN loose the weight if you want, but don't go off your meds! 🙂
