I have been sick with a winter cough, coughing so hard my ribs hurt, so I have been trying really hard not to cough. Anyhow on Saturday, I was in terrible pain..chest pain and just writhing about in pain. I dragged my sorry self up to A&E ......yuck.

The staff checked me for chest (heart) pain which was excluded with ECG and bloods etc. I was up there from about 0100 until 0700 hrs. Is it normal to let someone writhe about in pain before I was eventually given some morphine which helped. I think this was the very first time I had morphine. Prior I had GTN spray, ranitidine, tram adol and maxalon

Re: Comments please

Hi Neb,
That sounds like a frightening experience you had in A&E. Hopefully they will send a letter to your GP & i encourage you to go see the GP to talk about it.

Its is common & does seem inhumane that they let people suffer in pain for so long in A&E, but there are valid reasons why they hold back.

Drugs, including pain killers, can *mask symptoms & stop them making an accurate diagnosis. Also, depending on underlying conditions, the wrong choice of treatment & drugs can in fact exacerbate the problem, or even be lethal.

Finding the cause of the pain etc is paramount. This involves pathology & radiology & clinical evaluations / studies which can take hours to collate & evaluate findings.

Once the cause established, and they have ruled out worst case scenarios (emergency surgery etc), pain treatment can be administered - as you experienced.

It is hard thou, thinking they don't 'get' ya gonna die & every minute seems like an hour. Most of us have been there.

What was their conclusion? The cause? Will it come back? Are you ok tonight?

Re: Comments please

Thank you for the response. It was an awful night and yes every minute seemed eternal. My copy of the discharge notes basically said what they had ruled out. They did send me home with some codeine Phos and morphine tabs. Thankfully, I have not needed to take any of the discharge tablets. So I wonder what the pain and distress was all about .....it was real!!! Fortunately I am turning the corner with the vile cough...even my ribs dont hurt now, not expectorating horrible yuck either, and seem to have side step getting another cellulitic horror on my face.....it maybe a cold sore....the zovirax helped....though it has not been diagnosed when I had it the first time.

I hate going to the doctor....I feel a fool because they never diagnosed anything....I suspect they think I am just a neurotic woman. I find it hard to give any sort of coherent history etc

Re: Comments please

Sheesh @Neb

I have no idea where you are - but I have my own story

With sudden onset of severe chest pain I as given IV morphine straight away - and for hours in the ED and there was a blood clot in my lung

But they never let me hang around in agony with that one

With my spinal pain I keep away from the ED - it's better to stay home and I have medication - I know it will be rough but in the ED - it's the pits because they don't treat it - or give me Paracetamol - which I consider the most dangerous of the medication I am ever given -- arck!!!

It's actually dangerous to be left in so much chest pain for so long - like @Former-Member says they may been holding back because they did not know where the problem was - and mor phine can make breathing slow down by depressing the respiratory system

But - see your doctor about it - never feel like a fool because they can't find anything - just because they can't find something it doesn't mean that it's not there.

It seems as if you might be run-down though - try some vit c and use the zovirax - that does work on cold sores but you have to get onto it at the first tingle - but I am sure you already know that

What a horrible experience!!!

Re: Comments please

Thank you Decadian for your response. I worked as a registered nurse for many years and I would not have stood for leaving someone in pain. Mind you as a nurse you have to harangue the doctors, so this may have been part of the reason I was on my own for much of the time.

But hey, I have had another fun filled night of a repeat performance of the wretched pain....I had one of the tablets I was prescribed and I can think rather than swimming in my own personal miasma of pain. I have an appointment today at the gyne clinic for another issue, lucky me! Winter can be a drag eh! Hopefully, the results will be trivial.

Re: Comments please

You "miasma of pain" that does ring true to me - I have a bit of that because I have been on the computer a lot this evening and it is not good posture and I usually don't do it for so long

I think nurses to try and speak for the patients and maybe in the big public hospitals they can get someone in the ED to write up medication more easily than in a private hospital -

But I do have to speak up for nurses like you - I have had them ring the doctor when I have in a private hospital -

Thanks for your post -

Re: Comments please

Tottered back to the hospital yesterday with the same symptoms. This was tiresome as I missed my gynae appointment which was rescheduled for next week. I ended up settling without any firther drugs thankfullyas I was full anyhow. I was given a litre of saline as I am rather dehydrated and sent off home again. The ED doctor who saw me was a sweetheart and told me not to fear coming up if I am unwell, although she said I should expect to be admitted for a full battery of investigations should the pain return. Dear Lord .....please no.

When I am sick I like to sleep.....something that is not easy to do in a hospital.

Re: Comments please

I am glad you liked the ED doctor and she did not fob you off.

I have been very wary of seeing doctors in the path as I found it difficult and com plicated to explain my symptoms and situation.

Good to see you .. you havent been around for ages@Neb

I used to fell a bit jealous of nurses thinking they knew about the body as I felt so out of my depth when parenting my children. Now I realise even doctors dont know it all ... I do hope that pain doesnt return or at least is not serious. Take care

Re: Comments please

Hi @Neb

It is terrible terrible - when you have pain and don't know what's happening

I think it has something to do with a gyno problem - and if the bad is driving you around the bend I think it might be a good idea to go to the ED and see if they can set you up with another gyno appointment - or at least have a look at it

Make it plain you are there because you are worried about what the pain is - if they give you pain-tablets - good - if not - they need to investigate - but don't ask for them - or they might see a red flag

All the best @Neb and keep in touch
