They certainly can feel like they are losing their effectiveness, and that can be a tricky time. It can be a helpful reminder that they are only a part of the deal, and that we need to be putting in place a good amount of self-help processes (sessions with professionals or others with similar issues, regular exercise, etc). I hope that helps.

Hi @Shaz51

Great to see you. Its a bummer that your husband has cut off all his professional support. Its a credit to you that you care and now you are it.

Its a good question. Some medications seem to lose effectiveness when used in large populations or for large periods of time.

It took a while before the antibiotics wonder pills were seen to have a limit .. but now it is common knowledge that bacteria adapt and change and a new pill needs to be developed. Generally it is not accepted that we get a tolerance to anti-anxiety drugs .. like with morphine and opiates .. but I wonder .. a lot depends on the individual. Hence the fine-tuning that seems to be involved in getting an acceptable mix and dosage.

I guess the big thing is that it is not a one size fits all .. solution .. what workds for one may not work for another.

I hope your hubby credits you and appreciates your concern and support.

Hi @Shaz51
It really depends on what type of anti anxiety meds you're talking about. If they're part of the benzo group of meds it is possible to need increasing amounts but not always.
If you're talking about antidepressants that also work well for anxiety this is significantly less likely. The best thing would be to talk to your doc about it even if it's your hubby that is taking them.
Thinking of you 💕

Re: Does Anti anxiety Medications lose it`s effectiveness over time

I am trying to work out exactly what works best for me! The one thing I am sure of is that the wheels come off once I try to go it alone; regular contact with professionals and others is crucial, since this debilitating illness seems to know when you are alone and trying to battle on by yourself (as laudable as that aproach may appear to the sufferer), and so it invites itself into your life. Please encourage him to persevere with help: I have found that my wife becomes completely exasperated and full of disbelief when I stop getting help, even though I have decided that there is not a lot that can be done to help me. Good luck.
