what to do about self harm

what to do about self harm

Hey folks

I have been struggling with Self Harm for years.

I just cant stop myself, it has become an addiction.

I know we are not allowed to talk about our method of self harm here.

How do I seek help ? Are there specific therapy for self harmers ?

I am sick of it but I cant stop. I have been harming myself since I was 19.

Anyways, was worth a shot sharing here. Any advice for me ?

Thanks.

Hi @Mavrixx9, we're sorry to hear that you are struggling with self-harm. Have you got a GP that you can talk to, to get the ball rolling?

Hi there @Mavrixx9

Welcome to the forums. We'll done on reaching out about your self harm. Definitely first step is your GP. They can refer to a psychologist who can help.

Self harm is a coping mechanism we have that we fall back into because we've not replaced it with healthier coping mechanisms. Essentially that's what is needed. It will be hard at first. But slowly you can learn that there are many other ways to cope including self soothe and self care. All the best of carw. Let us know how you go. Re: what to do about self harm

Hi, as someone who has had a lot of issues with self harm and still on rare occassions do (I had an episode this week when i could not calm down as fast as I needed to), I have personally found that DBT (which includes CBT and other things) is often the therapy given for self harming.

It has not helped me as I had already tried those things it included (I used to run meditation classes myself and teach others positive visualization etc) but it seems to help many others so probably worth a try. You'll just a a doctors referral to a psychologist who uses this to help people and probably a mental health care plan done by the doctor.

Best luck to you and yes I myself have found that it is addictive. I work hard on distracting myself.

Thanks for sharing @taniaaust1

Distraction works, I read a lot these days.

I noticed I still self harm, but on a mild scale.

Goal is stop forever. So need to abstain just like any addiction.

Its work in progress. Yes, CBT is helpful.

Will discuss with Psychologist.
