recovery after diagnosis

recovery after diagnosis

Hi everyone,I was recommended this forum by a friend to link in with other people dealing with mental illness.

I was diagnosed with stress induced psychosis just over six months ago and have found it to be a terryfing and isolating experience. At times I've felt I've lost my identity,my purpose in life and have fears for what the future holds. After being on anti-psychotic medication I no longer experience psychotic episodes but have been left with a residue of severe social anxiety and a deep depression.I rarely socialize, dont work and at times find it difficult to do basic tasks such as taking a shower everyday or brushing my teeth. But i still have hope in the journey and what lies ahead, without knowing what that entails.

I'm curious to hear other people accounts of life after a diagnosis and perhaps also having that feeling that they are 'half way through the tunnel, travelling through the darkness to the light at the end'.

Thankyou for reading and I hope you're travelling well

Re: recovery after diagnosis

@yinyang Hi yinyang and welcome to the forums :). My diagnosis was brought on by stress as well (I have bipolar 1 and schizoaffective disorder). I find socializing almost impossible (I have been trying though). My world has closed in since the diagnosis but with the help of my mental health nurse, psychiatrist and the NDIS I am on the road to recovery (to a point). When I say 'to a point' I don't ever expect to return to where I was before my mi kicked in .... too much damage has been done but that wont stop me from leading a fulfilled life .... I am determined of that.

I can appreciate your difficulties washing and brushing teeth as for over one year when times were bad I basically slept all day. I was sleeping my life away. Thankfully things are not as bad as they once were with the medications I am now (even though I hate them and their side effects) my life has improved.

Again welcome and I hope you enjoy your time here. Just one thing if you want to talk to someone specifically put a @infront of their name like I did to you and that will notify the person of your posting. Love greenpea x

Re: recovery after diagnosis

Hi and welcome @yinyang 🖐😊

I wasn't diagnosed for a while after my brain broke, so I winged it until then. Once the psyciatrist said; "...complex post traumatic stress disorder" and created a MH treatment plan, (including the right med's thank God!) my life changed for the better. Knowing there was a name for what I had made all the difference as I could then research the disorder and be 'involved' in my recovery instead of standing on the side-line.

I really do hope you hang around as there's nothing quite like telling a story about what you've gone through and having people say; "OMG! I know exactly what you mean!" It makes you feel that being your flawed self is truly ok.

Feel free to join in on social or other threads too. Members are lovely and want to support you on your journey; paying it forward if you like. 💌

Hope your day's going well...

Hope 😘👵

Re: recovery after diagnosis

Woah @yinyang ! I know exactly what you are talking about when you refer to the residue of social anxiety and depression following the psychosis. I have schizoaffective disorder (like Greenpea) and found myself absolutely at the mercy of these two demons. I used to bounce between moods (elevation and mania to crushing depression). Just today I have written about being in the darkness in a tunnel and hoping the light at the end isn't an oncoming train.

I also wanted to welcome you to the forum and hope you'll share your journey with us some more. We're a great little community I think and we all muddle along together. 🙂
