Marriage Woes And I have had enough with the abuse, anger and aggression

Marriage Woes And I have had enough with the abuse, anger and aggression

I have been married for 12 years to a man who I think is, at the core, a good man but I am convinced he has some genuine mental health issues. He had a tough upbringing, grew up in the outback in a family where domestic violence and alcohol abuse was an everyday occurrence. This is his third marriage and it’s safe to say he’s had a string of unsuccessful relationships. He is a yeller - bellows and screams at me or others in his family (to a lesser extent) whenever things aren’t going his way, plays the blame game constantly (when he doesn’t like the outcome of something, it’s always my fault). I have taken to recording him because I fear if anything ever happened at least there would be some proof.

He openly despises women and some of the things he says about women are just appalling. He relies on me so heavily to run our life and finances, yet the number of times I’m told I’m a dumb bitch, stupid, have no idea of reality etc. etc. He is completely obsessive about the Government - he raves and rages about them constantly. There are days when he’s calm and seems to be completely “normal”, in control and then other days he’s so “up” and all his emotions seem to be so heightened and out of proportion. Other people’s opinions are completely dismissed, he just talks over the top of people. Also, he has the WORST memory .. he literally cannot remember things, struggles to read anything lengthy (although can read ok). He says he can’t switch his brain off a lot of the time. He speaks down to me, and others who have witnessed his behaviour say they are disgusted. Not sure where to turn with this, as I am constantly on egg shells and just want to get him assessed. He is definitely dealing with grief, as he lost his son when his son was only 12 and I don’t think anyone in the family ever gave him the grief counselling he needed. I know I haven’t articulated all of this very well, but I am hoping these behaviours might resonate with others and we might be able to start a conversation to help point me in the right direction of how to handle this.

The whole contradictory situation is that it’s not all negative. He is a hard worker, is really capable in a lot of areas (can turn his hand to a lot of things) but I still think every day about how I can leave, but I have so much invested financially (home and other investments) and at 54 I’m not sure I want to start again. I just know that I am no longer the person I was when we met ... all of my interests have been taken over by his, I hardly see my friends and I feel I am just existing to help him achieve his unrealistic goals. Thanks for reading.

Hi @Horses4me. That sounds like such a hard situation for you and I'm sorry to hear you are living with those kinds of challenges. It's really great that you're looking for some support as what you're experiencing would be very difficult at times and I imagine it would really take it's toll on you.

Do you have a GP that you feel you could talk to about this? GPs can be great people to start seeking support with/for someone who might have mental health issues.

While it is possible that your husband may have mental health issues, what you're experiencing sounds very much like family violence too which is behaviour that is never OK, mental illness or not. 1800respect (1800 737 732) is a great service with a helpline and some very understanding counsellors to talk with. They're open 24/7 and have a website with some resources and information that may be useful also. They might be able to help you with some ideas about how to start a conversation with your husband in a way that is safe for you as well as talk through what you're going through and where to from here.

It's really great to see you here. What you're experiencing sounds very isolating. I find connecting on the forum has really helped me when I've felt and been isolated also. There is lots of understand and support here so please keep posting if it helps.

Thank you so much @CheerBear for taking the time to share your thoughts and give your support. I really appreciate the helpful reference you have passed on also. Yes, it is family violence and it’s a constant roller coaster of emotion. There is so much more to my story which would give a fuller picture, but too complex to share here!

I did raise the situation with my GP but, to be honest, they don’t really understand how to tackle these situations because there is no “pill” to fix it. I will definitely contact 1800respect — I didn’t know about them and sounds like a really great place to start. Take care if you are also in a situation, and thanks again for your kind words of support.

Great to hear from you again @Horses4me. So sorry you're experiencing what you are. It isn't OK and you don't deserve it. Recognising it for what it is might feel horrible (it did for me) but it is also a positive for you in that you can find support, which there is a lot of.

Also sorry to hear your GP wasn't really able to help. I would hope that by now every professional out there would be able to recognise and respond to family violence in a supportive, helpful way. It isn't always the case though and it's so disappointing to hear about when it happens.

My kids and I left an abusive relationship a while ago. I did it with lots of struggle, tears and big feelings, and also with support from services like 1800respect. They can help you, or refer you to local services who can help you, put measures in place to increase your safety within the relationship as well as supporting you if leaving is the choice you'd like to make too. So glad to hear you're going to contact them. I really hope it is helpful for you.

Re: Marriage Woes And I have had enough with the abuse, anger and aggression

You are not alone,,

I am a girl in 30s and I am currently going out with a boyfriend of 2 years and we are attached to each other so much. However he suffers from anxiety, aggression, ocd and verbally abuses me. He takes 3 medications for his conditions. He got fired from job 3 times 2 years ago and as of last year he hasn't had any job. He can survive not working as his family has enough wealth to support his lifestyle. However it sucks for me because he doesn't have balanced lifestyle that he needs to have. I tried to leave multiple times however always ended up back with him as I love him much.

He is the sweetest person who can make me laugh and make me be on top of my world at most depressing times, (I was once diagnosed with mild depression) however he gets me down on the lowest times. He takes his medications at night and when the medication dose is down closer to night, he gets this thing called "embarrassed attack" where he gets extremely frustrated to go outside. He feels debilitated to go outside as he feels everyone is looking at him. He has to take 5 bottles of water in his backpack in order to wash out his throat whenever he feels something is stuck there. One time he had to brush his teeth and he leaves me alone in public places such as church service or restaurant so he can goto bathroom and brush his teeth or gargle his throat out which happens every visit outside. He doesn't have a career and feels embarrassed outside to talk about job. so we talk about current affairs at restaurants.

He also has a power struggle issue where if he is not given his way he will try and threaten and hurt me. When I sat on his coffee table, he pushed me over to the floor saying I shouldn't wreck his coffee table. When I asked him to do TAFE course next year so we can focus on our marriage and his mental health this year, he ranked up the music in the car and yelled and screamed at him and kept turning around from the destination we meant to reach. He often calls his mum to manipulate me to get me in line with his will. He pushed me down to the floor when I tried to use his credit card to get his dad a gift. Often times, He tried to lock me up in his flat and not let me go when we had fight and we were both about to blow off, he pulls out of promises that he doesn't want to keep by verbally abusing me (swearing). I think he said he used to be oppressed by his family because they keep provide for him but told him what to do with everything in his life. His dad's failure in business lead to anger outbursts and abuses on him. He also was bullied as a kid in boys school.

I struggle with him because he also keeps acting out abnormal outside which is out of the social norm. He used to think it's okay to have girlfriends while having a wife (which his father did). I had to correct him with bible verses as we are Christians. He also had to restrain himself from looking at porn sites, he plays games instead to help him. When we go outside he yells in excitement to gather attention in public as he really likes to be the centre of attention. I always try to ask him to be more considerate of others in public. He used to make flirting comments to waitresses and kept eyeing on them when we were out on dates and made me blow off. (I would start condamning him and criticise that his is a psychopath taking medications) When we go buy something at Bing Lee I would see him leaning in next to cash register girl which made me angry as a girl friend and I had to explain the science of comfort zone which is leaving the space of 1.5 m.

I used to get aggression just as much as he did all the time however over 2 years I learnt to not to fire up like him anymore. I get tired easily. Instead I try to use silence technique on him and stay away when he has done something wrong or abusive and ignore his request. I also try to report him to his church pastors or psychologist or mum which threathened him to work harder. If this doesn't work I announce his faultiness out in public and humiliate him (which is probably the worst method you can think of). However I never let him abuse me and get away with it. (I am much smaller than him) I tell him it is wrong and he needs to repent to Jesus and try to show consequences to his actions (btw I am a high school teacher). I feel like he has improved a lot since we first met and he is trying to get into the social norm as well. It's really hard work. We still fight like once a week. We are seeing his psychologist next week. Hopefully it will go in the positive direction. Hope you are coping okay,,
