Agoraphobia flare up 😭

Agoraphobia flare up 😭

I am really struggling at the moment with agoraphobia- I haven't been able to leave the house in the past three days & that is making me really anxious & nervous- I have to look for a new rental soon & I don't know how I am going to do it when I can't leave the house- I'm feeling really overwhelmed-i can't seem to snap myself out of it- when I was like this in the past my mum (who is now dead )- would come down and "help" me- but really she was enabling me & passive aggressively abusing me-I have completely isolated myself due to my not being able to trust anyone from all of the abuse I have suffered from family & people who were meant to love & care about me- I know this time of the year is impacting & triggering me- Does anyone else suffer with agoraphobia? Any tips? I'm going to go force myself to go for a walk as this is getting ridiculous-I'm so over feeling like this- thanks for listening.

Hi @Serenity1.

Sorry to hear that you're agoraphobia is flaring up at the moment. Have you managed to go for a walk?

I don't have agoraphobia but sometimes I get nervous about leaving my place because I make it into a far big of a deal than it really is. When that happens I find it best to have a walk where I won't have to interact with anyone or do anything else except walking.

It sounds like the rental stuff might be contributing to the issue, is that right?

Do you have any regular supports or people you talk to these days?

@TheVorticon - hi thankyou for replying- I did respond before, but I think I may have said something wrong to have the reply taken down? I'm not sure- but I can't manage to get into read the guidelines on my phone- so that might have happened as I can't see my reply-
I did not manage to go for a walk- I tried to build myself up to it- but just couldn't stop crying so couldn't manage it-
yes I am the same as you with going for a walk-I always feel better for it afterwards-even if I have to force myself to go- having my daughter with me on holidays, makes it a trickier thing to manage.
I managed to spend some time outside yesterday with my daughter which was even difficult but I am glad I did it- so am going to try and make it out today -
Yes the rental situation is 💯 contributing to the situation- as well as I am not getting any support not through lack of trying.
No I don't have any regular supports & I don't have any people I talk to regularly as I have isolated myself due to the agoraphobia & not being able to trust anybody from severe lifelong abuse. do u know how I go about finding a support person? Thanks for your reply- I appreciate it 😊

Hi @Serenity1,

That's unfortunate about your previous reply. It may have just been a glitch. If it was taken down by a moderator then you should receive an email from the moderators explaining what should be changed for the post to be accepted... But I've definitely lost posts due to connection errors and stuff too, so that may be the problem if you can't see an email.

Sorry to hear that you haven't managed a walk yet. But way to go about spending time outside with your daughter! 🙂 You did really well to do that. Sometimes it's good to maximise "things that worked last time" when we are trying to accomplish something - if you can think of some things that helped you to go outside with your daughter, then maybe those same things can help you to go out for a short walk. What do you reckon?

I can understand how stressful it is having to look for places to rent. I went through a period where I had to move around a lot on my own and it was pretty tough. Making a plan for what needs to be done can make it a little bit less daunting to just focus on each part step by step. Have you decided on the basics like location and price range and done any research about what's available at the moment?

That sounds really tough with the isolation. 😞 I'm sorry to hear that. This might be a dumb question, but have you tried talking to your GP about how things have been recently? Sometimes GPs can refer to other services that can help.

Hi @TheVorticon - Thanks for your reply again-I looked for an email about the missing response but couldn't see one- so maybe it just got lost in the system -
-Aw thanks for the support- I think honestly it was my daughter asking can I go outside please repeatedly that did the trick lol- but the house we are in at the moment only has a front yard and is visible every angle from the street (see through fence)-so I feel very exposed anyway outside but when am not feeling well it's overwhelming- we went to the beach today to ride her bike & down the water- so glad I did that as grounding myself in the sand & saltwater always helps cleans me and refresh I feel-
- The thing stressing me out the most about finding a rental is if I am not feeling well mentally I don't think I will be given one- apart from the normal stresses that come along with it all -& also I find it hard to comprehend things when my mental health is not good- so the task of physically looking for a place is seeming impossible - & we have moved three times since 2015- each time I have nobody at all to help me so physically it is incredibly difficult-I just do know where we are going to end up & I hate that feeling because I escalate everything thinking we will end up on the street. 🙁
Thankyou so much for your advice
-I have gone in to my gp so many times lately to request support & she just gave me a blank face/ or smirk - so I went to another gp hoping for a more proactive response & she said " what do you think this "support " will do for you?" I said " help me when I need it"- she said " they can't be there for you every second of every day!" I said " that's not what I'm asking for or even want!" - She said I need new medication not support & I told her I didn't feel comfortable taking new medication w/out support as IV had seriously bad reactions before- but she insisted that is what I needed- that doctor supposedly has "agoraphobia" also she told me- (if she does I don't know how she can go to work) & I got the impression she just thought I wasn't trying hard enough-I have asked the doctor at hospital each time IV seen him (twice)for a social worker- he has said "yeh sure we can do that " & it never eventuates- I go home & get worse-
I have an appointment with him tomorrow & I don't know how to get it through to him that I need a physical support person- except to tell him I have not been able to leave the house for four days ?🤔
Thanks again for your reply of support- I really appreciate it 😊

Re: Agoraphobia flare up 😭

Thanks for sharing more about what's been going on for you @Serenity1.
That's really disappointing about your GP and the doctor not helping you out with access to the support you need.

I don't have experience with advocacy and connecting to support people myself, so I'm sorry I don't really know what to suggest. Have you and the GP been open to the idea of counselling or talking to a psychologist? I know it won't help with the immediate day-to-day stuff straight away, but perhaps could be helpful in the longer term as something to supplement the medication.

When the SANE Help Centre opens back up for the new year you could possibly email them for suggestions. Otherwise the only other thing I can think of is seeing if you qualify for very short term NewAccess coaching who might be able to refer you on. But I'm sorry to hear it's been such a stuff-around when you've been asking for help and haven't been met with any.

Way to go on getting out to the beach though! That's awesome when you've been feeling the way that you have been lately. It sounds like having your daughter there to bug you about going out is something that can get things moving, but it's even better when you reap the benefits of it yourself. 🙂
