Sacked because of my mental health.

Sacked because of my mental health.

This year I was sacked from a $230,000 a year job because I suffer mental health issues.

The company doctor prescribed me some kind of drug after I told him I was feeling sad about not being with my kids.

He warned me this drug could increase anxiety. I didnt think too much about it because the Dr is always right.

2 weeks later I was a mess and was sacked.

That was 6 months ago. Now I have a bad reputation in my industry and cannot get another job.

Prior to this I was all for guys helping guys, being open about our mental health state.

I was a FIFO supervisor in construction in Oil and Gas. I was working for INPEX in Darwin.

I assume I was sacked because they were worried I was a suicide risk as there had been too many suicides on that project. There was a suicide the week I was sacked.

So, I leant from now on I will never be open about my mental health status, I will also encourage others working for me (if I can get a job again) to never disclose their health concerns to their employers if they want to keep their job.

This is only half the story, I used to be the biggest mental health campaigner on site.

HSE encouraged us to talk about it, encourage guus to come forward.

I tried for a month to meet up with OzHelp, I tried all sorts of ways to speak to somebody but no help was available except the doctor who put me on drugs that eventually led to my downfall.

Now I am have no work, no money and am just a peice of shit angry at how I was treated by my former employer.

Fuck them, and fuck mental health.

My girlfriend supports me now, god bless people who care for us.

Re: Sacked because of my mental health.

I dont know why I joined this group, or why I posted. I will probably regret it.

I just wish somebody had listened to me, I spoke to a lot of my work mates, I tried to contact the EAP without success.
It all came to a pass one day when the company sent the police to my hotel room to escort me to the hospital in Darwin.
The Dr in Darwin spoke to me for 5 minutes and let me go.
Next day I was escorted by security via plane to Perth. They took me all the way to a hotel.
Later I got an email saying whilst I was technically good at my job my personal life was not up to scratch.
Yeah, I fucked up but I cried for help that never came.
Never again, I will never again open myself up at work. My career has been ruined by this.

Hi @Daun_Muda,

Welcome to the forums. We are certainly glad that you are here, though I'm sorry to read that it was such an awful experience that prompted you to join. Battling against stigma, work place discrimination and side effects from meds that hurt more than they heal, are no doubt topics that many members here can relate to. I hope that you will find solidarity and support here.

I also wanted to suggest, if you haven't already explored this option, the possibility of contacting the mental health ombudsman. Without knowing which state you are in,I cant provide you with an exact contact number, but if you are interested in lodging a formal complaint and finding out more about your rights, the ombudsman could be a good place to start.

All the best,

Chamomile.

Re: Sacked because of my mental health.

Hi @Daun_Muda I was in a similar situation 9yrs ago doing fifo construction. I did do EAP was no use. Got promised alternative employment. Didn’t happen. Got given 2 week ultimatum to go back to work. I couldn’t. Eventually I applied for the dole after work stopped taking my calls. Then magically I was paid out. Ie technically sacked for being depressed I guess. Didn’t act quickly enough re unfair dismissal, had no clue. Sure there are still black marks floating around from it. Anyway. Its shit. Don’t believe what you are told in future it’s just lip service etc re companies in mining eg to say they give a shit about mental health. Id try unfair dismissal asap think there’s a 3 week window from memory

Re: Sacked because of my mental health.

Hi @Former-Member thanks so much.

Whilst I feel hard done by I just dont think it it is worth pursuing anymore, not in an ombudsman kind of way.

When I got sacked I vowed to get back up by doing what I could to help people like me as I know what it is like to be a guy in my situation. That gave me hope for a while.

But to be honest now, I live in my bed, I have left the house 2 or 3 times in the last 6 months.

I am hoping for a job, but to be honest all I do is stay in bed 24/7

Losing my job was the second biggest blow of my life. The first was sexual abuse as a kid.

I am by nature a very encouraging person, I loved my job because I was able to give the support to the guys that worked for me to be happy and to go home happy

I supported them the best I could.

I still miss those guys.

None of them know why I lost my job, I didnt want to sully the daily work experience by introducing any negativity.

I am still so sad, and I hate being in bed all day, it makes it hard to sleep at night.

Re: Sacked because of my mental health.

Hi @Daun_Muda, I too lost my job due to negative stigma surrounding mental health issues. I had a successful carer with the Health Department in my State when I was diagnosed firstly with schizophrenia and later, schizoaffective disorder. Officially, paperwork stated I was seen as a liability and that hurt to my very core. Nowdays I am languishing on a disability pension, but I am not giving up. I am studying and hoping to retrain myself in a different career where I can hopefully be just as successful despite my lived experience.

Re: Sacked because of my mental health.

@TAB

It was in march mate. And I dont really blame them, who wants someone on staff who is unsgable?

I have been FIFO for 20 years, this was the last thing I expected.

Anyway. Onwards and upwards right?

@Queenie

Its not really fair is it?

Re: Sacked because of my mental health.

@Daun_Muda So sorry, I empathize with you. I too have lost my job in the past, four times in fact, and it is so hard to get another job because they want to know where you were working last and why you left it when applying for a new job. I even traveled interstate twice to escape my so called reputation. I had to go from a caring profession to a job as cleaner and work my way back up again. But I grit my teeth and decided I would be the best cleaner I could be, I even got compliments on my good work and faithfullness. Cleaners are humans too and deserve respect. Maybe it taught me a bit of humility in to the bargain. Wishing you all the best in your next job, it will come hold onto hope. Cheers and all the very best.

Re: Sacked because of my mental health.

OP and others. You were shafted and I feel for you guys. I've been learning about vulnerability and opening up, but your stories confirm what I already suspected. People can throw up BS inspirational quotes and 'implement strategies for an inclusive workplace free of stigma' but at the end of the day it is purely lip service. Points scoring with the community at large. No one gives a rats and that's just the way it is. OP I would suggest seeking help though. For your and your families sake. Big $$ jobs are great, but I've come to learn the real treasures are much simpler. Mental health/well being and accepting ourselves are where it's at. I've only just begun trying to find myself at 42 and know this will be my biggest challenge yet. (I have social phobia). But I'm hopeful. Even as I feel I'm struggling/regressing.. I'm hopeful.
