Something’s not right

Out of comfortable options

Out of comfortable options

To start, I don't even know what I'm doing here. I suppose it's because the support system I thought I had just isn't there. My mother has too much going on, and family wise, that's all I have. My live in girlfriend has just as many mental issues as I do and that just makes it impossible. I've gone to her begging for comfort, for someone to just listen and not give up on me just because I struggle and she answers my cries with anger and defense.
Sometimes I feel as if talking is all I need but people make me so anxious the idea of seeking out someone, that would sit there across the room and charge me to talk and ask for help. Something all basic humans need and crave....that just doesn't seem right. I've got a problem with every obvious option.
I guess all I really want is the people that I've spent so much time supporting and nurturing to do the same for me and I don't know how to express what I need from them to feel okay again....

Re: Out of comfortable options

Hi there,

From my experience talking to a therapist has been life saving, because they listen to you with empathy, understanding and most importantly without judgement. It is difficult to move out of your comfort zone, I have anxiety and depression, but knowing I can walk through that door and tell my therapist anything I need to is slowly setting me free. All the best on your journey and always remember, you are not alone, and asking for help is one of the hardest things to do....but can be truly lifsaving. Good luck!

Welcome to the Forums @D94 and @Bodhi.

@D94, I’m so sorry to hear that things are hard and you’re not feeling supported at the moment. You mention that sometimes you feel as if talking is all you need. I’m glad that you have made a start by sharing a bit of what’s happening here. Please talk away – there is always someone to listen here on the Forums.

I understand that seeing a psychologist can seem like a strange concept at first. I like to think of mental health in the same way as physical health. Usually the things we do like eating healthily, exercising and getting enough sleep are enough to keep us physically well, but it doesn’t stop us from occasionally getting sick and needing to see the doctor. Similarly, sometimes the things we do to stay mentally well, like engaging in our hobbies and connecting with our support networks are not available or just not enough. I think we’re lucky that if that situation arises, we can ask a professional to step in and tie us over until our own supports are stronger.

Communication can be such a challenge in relationships. It sounds like you have been open with your girlfriend about needing her support and it sounds like you feel you are giving a lot to the relationship but not getting what you need in return. Have you been able to have a conversation about this when the two of you are getting along well?

@Bodhi, it’s great to hear that talking to your therapist has been life saving. Can you remember what made you come to the decision to talk to someone about what was going on for you? It sounds like it was a hard decision to make but has been worthwhile in the end.

Welcome once again @D94 and @Bodhi. I look forward to more of your posts.

Re: Out of comfortable options

Thanks Acacia, I was initially referred to a Psychiatrist because I was in complete breakdown mode, thankfully this Doctor responded to my need and I have been incredibly lucky to have had access to her as a therapist. If I had known before my breakdown what I know now, I would never have thought twice about seeking treatment.

Life with mental health issues is long, windy and incredibly difficult, and one that i could never have survived without help. I now see the world from a different view point. I still see this therapist regularly and with her we have worked my way through treatment resistant depression and anxiety and quite a few other issues to boot...this journey doesn't end unless you let it.

Working my way through my issues has been the hardest thing I have ever done, but nothing worth doing comes without challenge.

Thanks for the support,

Kind regards,

Bodhi

Re: Out of comfortable options

Firstly it's okay to be vulnerable, but happiness is with in your reach just maybe you have to deal with the bad stuff right now. suffering with depression myself actually doesn't make me any better at comforting my mother who deals with mental illness too in fact sometimes as selfish as it is it's too much for me to cope. I didn't like the idea of paying someone either and everyone I had payed to see spoke to me like quotes out of a psych text book or told me things I already knew. How old are you? If you are under 25 there's a program called headspace it's free.
