Support needed, support given ~ no religon or politics please...

Hi all....

I reduced my antipsychotic dose on Monday night. My psychiatrist said I could when I saw her late last month. I waited a week & a bit as finances were extra stressful.... I had extra of my benzodiazpine last night. My psychiatrist approved an increase of the dose of benzodiazpine, but I haven't needed much extra yet. I slept half of today (unusual for me lately) & then my partner got me out of the cabin & to a cafe. So far I just feel slightly more anxious & a feeling of detachment. I asked my partner how I seemed & he said "despondent". Last year I reduced the antipsychotic dose twice: the first time I remember an increase in paranoia & anxiety plus irritability. The 2nd time I was extremely anxious & irritable. That happened in the first half of the year. In the 2nd half I was hospitalised twice for a total of 2 months. I had some psychotic symptoms (I did even on maximum dose), but the main issue was the antidepressant I had been taking since 2012 started to give me more frequent & disturbing vivid nightmares, which were often ptsd related. It is a common listed side effect of that medication to get vivid dreams. Therefore, I withdrew of that & tried the newest antidepressant on the market, but experienced persistent nausea. That meant that I had then tried all the newer generation antidepressants - some more than once. I tried a tricyclic, one of the newer generation again & a maoi. I decided to try a mood stabiliser I had been on before on a low dose. Now I am just on the mood stabiliser ~ no antidepressant. The dose is the typical dose for depression. It took about 4.5 months to feel like it was helping or "working" ~ although it may have been placebo effect, time & yoga practice that actually helped. Anyhow, I am back on track now to be able to reduce my medications. I found the psychiatrist who is helping me by googling "holistic psychiatrist" ~ my partner rang the practice & the receptionist suggested my doctor instead of the one I found online. From the beginning I made it clear that I wanted to reduce my medications. She has been mostly supportive, but at times has tried to increase dosages & wanted me to have ect. I have had to be assertive & determined ~ a hard ask at times when I have been extremely suicidal. I have read research that found long term use of antidepressants increases episodes of depression & long term use of antipsychotics increases episodes of psychosis. Also lots of research on benzodiazpines causing anxiety & depression plus addiction. The research is convincing & I'm tired of the side effects. I have now found a psychologist who specialises in cbt for psychosis. I feel if I can get through these difficult withdrawals I will be able to manage my mental illnesses & live more fully. My partner & even my psychiatrist have said I am more alive now.

This is my journey ~ I'm not trying to convince others to go off their medication... I just want support & people to know I'm not doing it because I am okay, but doing it to become more okay ~ if that makes sense...

Please talk about anything in here. I just need a thread without religon, which is triggering to me.

Namaste,

Anna

Hi, @Former-Member, I see you as a brave, resourceful and strong person in facing big challenges. I support whatever decision you make about medications simply because they are your choices. I will support you too if you change your mind for any reason. Like many others, I would dearly love to be able to live without mine so it will be great to be with you on the journey and hopefully learn some things along the way. Namaste.

So glad you started your own thread @Former-Member. It will be a good way to get to know you better and share things we are both interested in.

I agree with maz ... you are brave. It is also a consistent stance with your food and healthy active lifestyle values ... and everyone knows it is good way to go. Congratulations.

So much for all the 'disordered thinking' and 'lack of ability to follow through' that is supposed to be a symptom of schizophrenia. We can talk about that type of stuff later if you want ... I have to let you know I have weird ideas and a distinctive pedigree ...

I also googled for wholistic type psychiatrist 2 years ago and found one who was local. I visited him for 2 sessions as he advertised ... short treatment and assessments. I found him interesting. His main focus was actually in training and trying to change the profession from within .. to move them away from automatic pill pushing. There is an integrative medicine website. You are not alone in your beliefs.

Personally I am with @Mazarita at the moment in that I substantially upped my meds a few months ago. My long term commitment is to come down again if possible without negative consequences to my son.

I have been told by one professional that I will always be on meds .. by another that I will always need psychotherapy ..

it can be useful to monitor your state with respect to your meds.

Sometimes when we have been through a hard time .. we constantly 2nd guess our every thought and feeling and response ... probably a middle line between is most helpful ... when we get to a stage when we can trust and accept our basic instincts ...

I am a little surprised that your doc also suggested ect ... but there are probably heaps of things about modern approaches to ect that I dont understand ...

Dear @Mazarita & @Jacques,

Thank you for your kind words, encouragement & support...

Yes, I know many people seem to wish that they didn't have to take psychotropic medication. Others seem happy on it, but frustrated by side effects. Some people have a hard time getting off & others an easier time. I have been on psychotropic medication since 2003 now. I'm finding this particular antipsychotic very difficult to withdraw from. I did withdraw from it in 2014, but much too fast with only the support of a gp & psychologist who was a warm, beautiful person & great to unload my everyday worries ~ however did not ever help me deal with psychotic symptoms over the 6 or so years I saw her. I have better support in place now.

I just watched a really good movie & I'm going to try to sleep now. I'm going to yoga in the morning.

Watching the movie was a good distraction & now that it is finished I feel quite anxious. It helped to get your kind support.

Let me know how you are doing if you want to!

Namaste,

A

Thank you @Appleblossom... I will try to reply properly tomorrow. I just want to say I have been told by a psychiatrist in public hospital that I will eventually succeed in committing suicide... Health professionals are human & we can't always trust what they say. It isn't always in our best interest to. My old gp who I saw for 11 years told me I would always need to take medication. He was a very caring gp most of the time ~ sometimes he seemed distracted ~ probably by his own problems. The most common thing I hear is ~ I don't have a magic wand ~ it is old now ~ I hate it when they say it.

I'm feeling quite unwell now ~ I need to try to rest/sleep....

Thank you so much @Appleblossom, @Mazarita & @Jacques...

Namaste,

A

Oh Anna, that was a terrible thing for that doctor to say, @hiddenite had a doctor a few weeks ago tell her to stop wasting his time, it is so hrrible how people with MI are treated within the medical establishment.

Just because he/she said that does not make it true @Former-Member, you have a great support network around you and lots of people care about you, i care about you and your wellbeing Anna.

I am feeling the same Anna, i have had overwhelming urges for the past few days, feeling low and having a low sense of the future.

I hope one day the medical personel treat patients with MI like they do with people with physical problems.

Just keep reaching out Anna, we all have a perfect fit, you may see a lot of people but only "click" with a few.

my thoughts are with you my friend, be safe.

Jacques

Hi @Former-Member - I'm so glad to see you back here. I'm really in awe of your strength and decisions around medications and determination to walk your own path. I think I can learn a lot from you. I am about to go out but wanted you to know I'm glad you are back and I'm thinking of you.

Re: Support needed, support given ~ no religon or politics please...

Thank you kind people...

My laptop is broken. Partner has been fixing it over & over. He said I should buy a new one with centrelink advance $$ I can apply for soon. I got this one that way in 09 or 10. It went back once under warranty. His laptop is broken too. Anyhow, harder to write proper replies on phone....

I don't think I get the disordered thinking @Appleblossom - sometimes my thinking feels confused, but when I ask health professionals if they can understand me they say yes. My main symptom is delusions of persecution, which are scary. Some voices which come & go, & sometimes delusions of reference. Paranoia.

It was an effort of willpower to get to yoga today. I'm feeling low & flat more than anything. Just re reading John Grisham novels to get through the days. (also to save $$ on new novels until medical expenses go down again...)

Yes @Jacques - he was not a good psychiatrist or person to say that. The Australian mental health system has failed me in many ways.

I'm just feeling really washed out....

Re: Support needed, support given ~ no religon or politics please...

Hi My friend Anna,

Yes the MH system has failed me too, i have been told by many psychiatrists that i am faking this illness to get the dole, who isolates for 15 years to get a little bit of money? anyway after two of them saying that to me i have given up on them, i will fight on my own, with the help of all of the kind people here. 🙂

i have paranoia too, feelings that i am the enemy of society, that everyone hates me, this is part of the reason for me isolating.

anyway i am here if you want to chat.

hugs, Namaste

Jacques
