Positivity, is it a myth?

Positivity, is it a myth?

For a short time, I was once an insurance salesman. My manager increased my sales expectations every month. After 5 months in true bipolar form, I resigned (I didnt know I had the disorder).

He was shocked. I'd explained to him that the pressure of fulfilling his expectations was beyond my needs to feel comfortable....when would the bar stop being raised? He told me I was a negative person. I dont think I was but before I left that profession I attended a motivation lecture. In 30 minutes my life changed forever. I was positive from then on.

However positivity has its limits. Lying in bed under the cover of depression and trying to be positive just doesnt "cut the mustard". I've learned to wait for the up cycle to arrive then add my positive spin on that to get moving.

Other ways apart from motivation lectures, to change from negative to positive are-

- surround yourself with energised people
- spend less time with negative thinkers
- remind yourself that life's struggles is normal life
- set goals
- talk to yourself in the mirror, self motivate
- try to accept your illness

Stephen Fry once said "if I was reincarnated I'd want my bipolar to come with me, as it is part of me"
That's a big statement but it reflects his acceptance regardless of his ongoing pain.

Positivity is not a myth but one should be realistic how far it can propel you beyond your comfort zone, thats when it becomes fake, like selling cars. Its more about getting the best out of yourself not conquering the world.

Once you have transformed to being positive life does change. You'll recognise negative thinkers immediately and you wont want to return. But you will also need to get things into perspective in that your newfound outlook will not cure you.

Being a positive person will allow the good times better for you and others around you and those negative moments less often in your life.

Thats worth the challenge.

What do you think?

Hi and welcome Tony; @Whiteknight

You're here! 🙂 'Positively' wonderful!

Great to see you writing up a storm. Thought I'd pop by and say hello. I don't frequent this forum very often, but when I do friendly folk welcome me with open arms. It's more laid back and personal than 'other' forums; takes a little time to get used to it. But when you do, it's refreshing.

Warm thoughts;

Hope @Hope4me

Hugz! lol

Love your post @Whiteknight more than just "liking" indicates.

Re: Positivity, is it a myth?

Hi @Whiteknight. I really enjoyed coming across this post. It was such a nice reminder on a day that I've struggled with lots of negative thinking.

Your post reminded me of something I try to do when I can (admitting it can be a stretch sometimes) which is to "look for the good". Whatever it is, however fleeting it might be, or insignificant it might seem, I find it helpful to find or hunt for if I have to, something that feels "good" for me. It can be as simple as a stopping for a moment to focus on a flower that catches my eye, in an otherwise miserable looking and feeling place/point in time. Or taking a moment to really appreciate how goofy and funny our cat is when he chases his tail around the lounge room.

I can easily fall into the place where I am overwhelmed with sadness, hurt or frustration over who or what I don't have in my life, and it can take from who and what I do. Trying to find "good" can sometimes shift my focus away from what life doesn't have and what I can't do, to what it does and what I can.

I really liked your point on being realistic about how far positivity can take us and think that's really important to remember. It definitely doesn't fix or cure everything, but maybe it can be another tool to add to help us get through the painful, difficult, challenges that can and will happen. I also have lots of appreciation for how hard it can be to find positives when there can be so many things going against us - sometimes it's too hard to do and I think that's ok too.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts 🙂

I also liked and related to what @CheerBear said - positivity does not necessarily fix or cure the pain, the hardship, the abuses, the injustices, the grief, the losses, the trauma, the ills, the inequality; the adversity that life throws at us; as you so aptly pointed out is the inevitable struggles and obstacles of life we all face. But looking for the good keeping positive prevents us from sinking into that despairing pessimistic minefield of negative emotions that such pain can inflict whose black hole "sees no way out" - by "focusing on the good" the mind sees a way forward - a glimmer of light. And that is the lifesaving difference. The difference between seeing hope where others see none.

And it's that hope born of keeping positive that can raise us up from the darkness enabling us to take a step forward rather than remaining stuck blindsided in our pain. And that's no myth I have experienced @Whiteknight. I find it can work - one day at a time, one obstacle at a time, one step at a time.

Hi @CheerBear

Your reply reminded me about a poem I wrote

PROBLEM FLOWER

On your saddest day you pick a daisy flower
Pick a petal for each of your woes and count them by the hour

And when it becomes a stem and petals line the floor
Gather them in your loving arms and put them in your store

So when you're sad and you count petals by the hour
Remember of all your problems you never have as many as that daisy flower...

Hi @Former-Member

Totally get you there.

You reminded me about something I'm passionate about with my positivity- tokenism.

Of all challenges we can face in the world grief is the toughest. There is no equal reaction that can fill that whole in. That person cant be replaced, so we make up counter measures like "at least he isnt in pain" or similar phrases. Thats tokenism in a time of huge impact on our lives.

So, how can we use tokenism? Eg. You receive an unexpected bill for $200 payable in 30 days. You panic, you search your purse (ps I have a wallet 🙂 ) and all you have is $100. If you put $50 away it is tokenism towards the problem. It will get you through emotionally because you are contributing towards paying off the bill. You are being as proactive as you can afford to be.

I forgot to give my wife breakfast in bed on mothers day. It was terrible. I found the positive....I realised I really do like my eggs sunnyside up and my bacon crisp!...

Never a truer word @Whiteknight - grief is the agony. I love your analogies and look forward to your next thread 😊
