Waiting on test results. Feels like an eternaty

Waiting on test results. Feels like an eternaty

So i had to have an ultrasound last thursday, but my gp is on holidays untill next monday so a two week wait. I had conviced myself there was nothing wrong, untill i got a phone call saying my gp wanted to see me.

I have found myself dwelling on what he said to me two weeks ago. It could be cancer, but if it is it is easy to treat.

At the same time i am trying to tell myself it could be any number of things, not cancer. Keep a level head i tell myself. Trying to stop the what ifs. I have strong views on chemotherapy. I want quality if life not quantity. Can i trust the drs to be up front and truthful with me. I know here i go catastrophising again.

In a way i am thinking the worsed and hoping for the best, and at the sametime keep a lid on my emotions.

Hi @Chris

Having to wait for test results can be so nerve-wracking. Particularly if the doctor has called you in. You are very insightful to identify that you're thing about 'what if' scenarios. And as you know, letting our mind go over what if scenarios can allow us to imagine up all types of catastrophes. Remember though, the 'what if's' haven't happened, and they might not. Focusing on something that's not here in the now can create unnecessary stress.

On the one hand, I get that being prepared for news might be helpful to a degree. But on the other hand, thinking about worse case scenarios can lead to anxiety. I find giving myself a limit to think about it can be helpful. For instance, I allow myself 30 minutes to think about an issue, and then I mentally put it away, and try and turn my attention to something else. If I find myself thinking about it, I remind myself that it's not time to be thinking about it.

Hope you can stay on top of it all until you find out what the news is.
