Re: Letter to the shower

Oh my goodness! Are you my twin?!? I get like that. I have a difficult time most days but when I'm very low or anxious it's impossible.
But for me I've never liked showers or baths. I don't like being undressed and not able to hear what's going on outside of the noise of the shower and freak myself out every second.
When I was in hospital I had to have a friend (who was looking after my lil boy) come and stand outside the shower every few days!! Doh
Sometimes I get by with a cloth wash and do my hair very quickly in the laundry sink. I haven't even shared this with my psychologist because I thought it was such a silly thing that no one else in the world would struggle with. So I'm relieved to find you! I've read so many people say they are going to have a soothing shower or relaxing bath and I just feel icky!

However to try and be helpful.... Is there something that you could do to make it more pleasant? A nice smelling soap or body wash? Warming up a towel before hand (if it's not boiling hot where you are!!) making a time to do it and sticking to the time? Having someone be there for you (even just outside the door)
Lj

@Tattoonurse @Former-Member,

My hand is up too. I confess I went about three weeks without a shower when I was in deep depression, not that long ago. These days I aim for every second day but it still often stretches out to four or five. Basin washes in between. How liberating to be able to discuss this with others who struggle with it too. I also have a hard time mentioning this to mental health professionals because it's so embarrassing but I have told my psychiatrist about it. He sees it as a symptom of depression. I almost always feel better after a shower but, like @Former-Member, I'm not keen on the vulnerability of being naked (though I used to have no problem with that). I think it's slowly getting better as a range of other things are improving slowly but slow is the operative word.

Me too. I feel safer with clothes on ... and with neck removing clothes was big challenge. For most of the time I had a brief shower on automatic ... forc ing myself .... and certainly not feeling relaxing at all . In my gym period ... I changed my showering to after my workouts and lost decades of routine ... now I shower any time when needed ... and then lately as I am letting things go a bit realised it was becoming alternate days.

A discussion emerged in choir about this with another lady ... we agreed that the daily shower was an excess ... with Australia's water shortages ... so there I am making it a virtue not to waste water ...

@Former-Member,

How does it feel actually writing about it?

I'm totally....I must stay clean and must have a shower....but not lately.........I've noticed, since my medication messup for a long time.......I just am not showering.

I have no problems with taking my clothes off or anything....so in that way it's ok. When my kids were little, I was okay showertime and in the shower sometimes twice a day.
