Help with job applications!

Help with job applications!

ACK! I have several job applications due in midnight tomorrow night and I'm struggling.

I'm basically applying for anything and everything, quite a few jobs 'below' my skill level - entry level jobs without tertiary requirements etc.

What should I say in my job application for why I am applying for jobs significantly below my skill level?

Can I be honest and say that the combination of studying part-time and a mental ilness means that I struggle with fulfilling stressful work requirements??? (aka I have anxiety attacks and cry at work all the time and this apparently puts people off)

What should I say?

@Faith-and-Hope, @Teej, @Queenie, @Appleblossom, @Phoenix_Rising, @CheerBear, @TAB,

@Shaz51, @Former-Member, @SleepyPanda, @Former-Member and anyone else I've forgotten!

Hi @Former-Member .....

I reckon it’s okay that you put the reason down to study commitments fluctuating in intensity, and leave it at that.

Many people buckle or become emotional under pressure, not just people with mi ..... that is intended as validation, not invalidation of your mi.

Re: Help with job applications!

I'm not sure what the appropriate answer would be for a job application @Former-Member. I'm always upskilling, however, I will find myself in much the same boat at the conclusion of my study. For me, I've turned away from my field I'm qualified in to go into a completely different field. I guess then I could use that excuse when applying for entry-level jobs.

Are you staying in the same field at all? I wouldn't blatantly advertise a mental health condition in your application, as it could go against you (stigma).

Best of luck. I hope someone else has better words of wisdom than I do.

Re: Help with job applications!

There’s a few discussions in career chat that talk about this from memory @Former-Member. So proud you’re putting yourself out there again. Good for you.

Im really not sure what to say or advise. There are pros and cons for both. I’m wondering if you have access to a disability job provider to discuss it with. You may be able to talk to @OstaraAust about this.

When I just applied for volunteer jobs I disclosed but only because the person coordinating it disclosed she’d had a long stint working in mental health which helped enormously. I didn’t have to explain myself too much. She did say there was a line between disclosing and disclosing too much.

Re: Help with job applications!

I just checked facebook.
WHY DID I DO THAT!??!?!
I just feel like such a failure. If one more person gets into medical school (my dream that i got very close to), gets engaged or pregnant I'm going to scream!
And here I am applying for APS 3 jobs!
URGH!

Re: Help with job applications!

My answer was based in the presumption that you are applying for part-time work as an income while continuing to study @Former-Member. And yes, I wouldn’t mention the mi, not for any other reason than it might not become an issue ...... same way you might not mention suffering from menstrual cramps or something ..... need-to-know basis only.

I suffered such intense menstrual cramps as a teenager that I considered I wouldn’t be employable ...... would have lost three days every month.

Facebook is one of the places I don't go unless feeling very strong emotionally @Former-Member. It is full of my peers and former colleagues achievements and life events. Something so far from what I experience that it often gets me down. I play games on there and that is it for now.

Re: Help with job applications!

The reality is @Faith-and-Hope with therapy, medication. psychiatrist and physiotherapy my health care costs come to $20k/annum so I need a full time job to pay the bills.
I need to earn 50k net to break even to pay all my bills!!! Stupid MI! Stupid rent prices in capital cities!

Re: Help with job applications!

It just hurts me @Queenie,
if it was just me not reaching milestones I think it would be okay, but its the judgement from others for why I haven't reached those milestones they think I'm a useless failure, makes me feel like even more of a useless failure than I already do. URGH!
