I usually scroll through Google images for pictures that might be suitable @Lemonjuice. It's a great source for avatars. I'm on a laptop so when I find one I like, I right-click and go to save image as and rename it to save under the pictures folder.
Now to change the set avatar as your chosen profile picture. Click on the blank profile picture to go to your profile. Click on your profile picture and it should show the middle option 'choose another profile picture'. Click on this and select browse from your computer. It should open up your pictures folder. Just re-size and crop the picture to fit. Once approved by a moderator, you'll be able to see your new avatar.
