Coming off antidepressants and withdrawal symptoms

Coming off antidepressants and withdrawal symptoms

Hi everyone,

I've recently ceased taking antidepressants after 10 years of being on them and I'm struggling quite a bit. I've read up on some of the withdrawal symptoms, which has helped reassure me that what I am experiencing is normal, but how am I supposed to know what is a sign of the depression returning versus temporary withdrawal symptoms? It's Day 10 without my medication and I thought I would be past the worst of it but I am still feeling extremely irritable and emotional. I've also had numerous spells of uncontrollable crying after feeling numb for many years. Has anyone been through the experience of coming off antidepressants? Any tips or advice would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi @elasticheart88

Yes I have had much experience withdrawing off anti depressants - several times. Day 10 is very early days and what you are feeling now is typical of withdrawal - but being under the eye of your medical professional is important through this process.

The longer a person has been on medication. - the longer it will take to completely wean off them and for the anti ds to be completely out of our system. This has been my experience and was explained by my medical professional at the time. I was told it is not advisable to go off cold turkey but slowly wean over time. This was planned out with my GP. It took some considerable time until they were completely out of my system.

Drinking lots of water and adequate exercise /healthy diet helps to flush them out.

A medical professional with such indepth experience would be the best to advise in your individual situation. I hope this has helped and that you feel better soon

Hi @elasticheart88 Your experience of coming off antidepressants sounds very similar to mine. I had 3 extremely difficult weeks. So difficult that it sent me into a spin and I went back on, but a different drug. My feeling is that everything you describe is a result of coming off, and that it probably takes a long time to find equilibrium. I hope you have support to keep you going. It's tough.

Hello @elasticheart88

Welcome to the forum, it is nice to meet you, I don't believe we have met before 🙂

It sounds incredibly confusing not knowing whether it is the withdrawel symptoms or your depression symptoms returning at this time, you are doing a good job of reflecting on that and trying to get some support to cope with feeling that way.

There is a helpful thread by @Queenie that is called Feeling miserable could it just be the meds that might be helpful to read through, as well as keep an eye on what symptoms you are particularly finding difficult and getting some extra support for that through self-care and extra sessions with your therapist and/or gp?

Please take care of yourself at this time, it sounds quite difficult

Lunar 🙂

Re: Coming off antidepressants and withdrawal symptoms

@elasticheart88 - I agree with everything @Former-Member said. It does take a fair while to fully withdraw from old medication. Especially if you have been on it for 10 years.
I wonder if you are withdrawing with the help of your gp? & if you slowly reduced the dose before stopping altogether. That will help reduce the severity of the withdrawal symptoms. Some medications also have more severe side effects than others.
If you visit with your gp or stay in contact with your psychiatrist, they will be able to help you judge if the depression is coming back or not

Re: Coming off antidepressants and withdrawal symptoms

Thanks everyone, your replies have been really helpful. Yes, I have come off them fairly slowly and with the support of my GP. I have felt slightly better in the past 24 hours and the symptoms tend to come and go but when they are there they are quite intense. It's so helpful to know that others have had a similar experience. What a great forum this is for supporting each other. Thank you! x
