a wrong portrayal

a wrong portrayal

It is really upsetting to watch CSI and NCIS and crime and detective shows always portraying the schizophrenic as a psychotic serial killer. Even on 'Home and Away' they depict the character Mick presumably a schizophrenic as a psycho. It upsets me as I have the diagnosis of a-typical psychosis or schizophrenia since 26, and I'm a decent good living Christian. My friend told me he does not see me as having a 'disability'. If I didn't mention my diagnosis, people would not know. Another friend of mine with chronic schizophrenia is a good living Christian. My father told me only about 2 % of people suffering schizophrenia commit murders. So why a does the media paint us all with schizophrenia and tar with the same brush. Why is it that a few bad cases of schizophrenia in the telly news and newspaper make us all look bad. Not all of us with schizophrenia are bad. We are ordinary people that suffer from an illness. We are not all the same. I have heard from Jesus at the Healing Rooms. He gave some words to the church elders to tell me. I'm a good Christian, and I've been in remission of schizophrenia, and I'm a good person and with no criminal record and I've never hurt anyone in my life with words or actions. That's why this wrong portrayal of schizophrenics makes me sad. We are not all like this.

Re: a wrong portrayal

it is very true, sadly, it is portrayed so often with violence that I think many people believe that nayone with schizophrenia could be dangerous 😞 which is awful. Sane has Stigma Watch where they advocate against such representations.

Re: a wrong portrayal

Sounds difficult @BambiFawn . Organised religion can struggle with all sorts of issues. It there is a Good Christian does that mean there are bad? Btw my mum who passed 6mths ago was an ex deaconess, lifelong church goer and elder for many years. I didn't realise how deep her belief was til saw religious studies papers in a trunk. She was nicest person you would ever meet though and best mother

Re: a wrong portrayal

When I was studying, I wrote several essays on the inaccurate portrayal of mental illness in the media which were well received by classmates and teachers @BambiFawn. I've since reported several things to Sane's Stigmawatch, as how mental illness, particularly psychotic disorders such as schizophrenia, and how they are portrayed to the 'world' is something I feel strongly about. My own family believe many of these Hollywood-style portrayals, and as such, have distanced themselves from me, believing I am dangerous. I have never done anything remotely dangerous to anyone, except myself.

dear @TAB,

My condolances for your dear beloved mother. I'm so happy for you that you had a really nice mother. One that was loving and caring and a beautiful Deaconess. My mother was not so loving, and I think she must be sick as she keeps hurting me. But I'm so happy you had a mother who loved you. The precious flowers are picked first and go to Heaven. Take good care, your dear friend, BambiFawn.

@TAB

so lovely to read how proud you are of your mum..

she truly meant so much to you....

to be the best mum...beautiful words..

it must have been such a special time for you finding some of her belongings in the trunk...learning more about her as a lady...apart from her being your mum..

a different generation...so many things unsaid..not discussed..

my mum is 91 and I have learnt more about her in the last ten years than ever before

take care

Re: a wrong portrayal

Hey dear @Queenie,

It's so good of you to address this false portrayal by the media. Not all people with schizophrenia are bad or violent or dangerous.

Ya you seem like a lovely person and I am sorry your family have distanced themselves believing in the lies. They are really lies of the enemy really. I've been told to declare ' I have the mind of Christ'. My mother had beaten me up and abused me verbally for years and was on a drug for depression. She can be bad tempered, angry and violent. Whereas as I have never hurt anyone with words or violence. She is sick, because she tries to hurt me with words and has induced my illness, and she has no conscience over what she says to me. I have had to move miles and several hours away from her. My Psychologist said she is the one with the problem and issue, not me lol. My mother is not replying to me and has not been in contact for 3 months. But there were years when we did not talk, when I was mentally well and working before.

Ya my mother puts me down for having schizophrenia. She is often seen gaslighting. It is very bad of family to treat other family badly. Some families are loving and supportive, others aren't But my Auntie says that if anyone puts someone down for having a mental illness, they are in the wrong and are ignorant to mental illness.

I wish I could give you a big cuddle dear @Queenie.

The saying is so true ' we can choose our friends but not our family. Some family members can be bad. I'm just blessed to call the church and my close friends as my family now. I choose the company I keep and it's good company now. I'm happy because my dear friends are loving and supportive and would never hurt me like my mother has with words.

Re: a wrong portrayal

Ya dear @TAB, my father is 76 i think, and he has schizophrenia and manic depression and now parkinson's disease. He gets hellish depression and I feel so sorry for him. I pray he will be alright. I don't really call my faith a religion, it is more of a relationship with Jesus and Father God lol. It's alright to believe in what u want, of course lol. Doing what is right and well by others is very good of you dear @TAB. I just love your avatar cat smiling at me haha. He looks a happy, well loved cat lol. My cat is fat and well loved.
