Pregnant and excited but depressed and confused
Hi, I'm reaching out because I can't find anything specific to this...
I'm 36 and expecting my first child (a son!) after years of being diagnosed as and confirmed as infertile. I was very excited at this "happy accident" (my partner was also classified as infertile and we had both come to terms with being childless after years of nothing happening), we had not sought intervention because 23+years for him and 19+ years for me had taught us that this miracle would never be ours.
Then our son happened. At time of writing I am 25+5 days pregnant with our unexpected miracle.
So I should be over the moon, right? And I was. Extremely over the moon and excited and planning for the future.
And then the old black dog started biting again and robbed me of that joy in a sea of self-doubt, irritability, and an inability to feel joy about anything.
At first my partner and I thought it was just hormones, "baby blues", but it's been getting worse for weeks to the point that I've begun having thoughts that our son would be better off without me, temptation to self-harm, thoughts of just "disappearing".
This comes after a series of blows; being diagnosed with gestational diabetes wasn't a big deal until I found out I probably had diabetes already, followed by a diagnosis of diabetic retinopathy and a prognosis of complete blindness by the time I'm 40 as a result. My dreams of labour were shattered when I was advised to go with a C-Section because they don't think my body will cope with labour and delivery. My partner has been getting moody and distant because he's worried about where we will live when we move in together after Bub is born. I'm terrified because last time I lived with a man I was in full-blown DV and even though I know my partner is different, the fear is there...
Add in the complications of having to travel four hours to appointments because I'm too "complex" to birth locally and pregnancy+age related complications like blood pressure issues, mobility issues, now the addition of insulin...
I'm overwhelmed and terrified.
And the final blow in my enjoyment of impending motherhood was a "friend" raising concerns that my partner might leave me and I won't be able to cope and welfare will take my child.
I just need to talk to others who have been through this and come out okay. I've dealt with depression my whole life, I know it CAN be managed and sometimes even beaten, but it's crushing me right now.
