Sydney Swans star Lance Franklin deals with mental health condition

Sydney Swans star Lance Franklin deals with mental health condition

Hi everyone,

Yesterday Sydney Swans AFL star Lance 'Buddy' Franklin withdrew from this weekend's game to deal with an ongoing mental health condition.

For those who haven't seen the news reports, here is one by the ABC

I have seen a lot of support for Buddy in social and also people sharing their own battles with mental health difficulties. I personally admire Buddy for being open and hope that he gets the help he's looking for.

What do you think?

Are these stories in the media constructive or destructive?

Re: Sydney Swans star Lance Franklin deals with mental health condition

I think stories in the media can be helpful - as they draw attention to a particular illness, therefore providing some education to the wider community (some who may not otherwise read about a topic), and hopefully reducing stigma about the condition and help-seeking. I think it can become problematic if the person becomes hounded by the press, where stories are exaggerated and the meaning behind the disclosure becomes lost in the tabloid papers. Does anyone have any other thoughts?
