Something’s not right

fear of something

fear of something

Hi all,

Not sure how to explain this or what im asking exactly.. but i have been unable to follow up on going to the drs for a while for something, actually a few things. I'm so stuck on it. I have had some physical health issues/symptoms/worries for a while. I did go to a dr in January about it and it was a male dr which made it harder, he asked me to have 4 tests and i was so overwhelmed i didnt do anything and i didnt go back to see him, and he never followed up (my old gp was great but he left last year...). My psychologist actually came with me to a new gp a while ago and gave the gp a run down of my history and stuff which was to help break the ice with this new gp and to give me option of some other support between sessions etc. but the gp was overwhelmed i think and was very quiet/not warm or friendly and it didnt feel right. we didnt get into the physical stuff much but she did reorder tests... which i havent done and havent been able to go back again, and even though i've taken my kids to see her a few times she hasnt ever asked how i am... (which is fine she may not remember/recognise me?) But things are not great physically,

But things are not great physically, i have pains that i shouldnt and getting steadily worse and im too scared to do anything about it, other symptoms as well which i wont bore anyone with but even though i keep telling myself i will go and get one test done .. the easiest a blood test.. i just dont/cant do it. I dont know if im scared of the tests itself, people touching me or the results or what it is. ive nto been like this before, i've always just been pretty ok with drs (up to a certain point.. but i always just did it when necessary)...

Has anyone else had similar fears or not been able to do something that they should/need to?

Re: fear of something

Hi @Former-Member, yes, I've had times too when I didn't go to the doctors when I should have, or neglected symptoms for too long, way too long sometimes. Then in my own mind my fears have grown out of proportion, only to be alleviated when I eventually do get myself to the docs to find it's something fairly benign and treatable. The only thing that helped me was recognising that I was neglecting my wellbeing and really pushing myself to go for the sake of myself and those who care for me. Before I got a regular doctor, I sometimes just didn't talk about my mental health issues if I was there to see about something physical. Even with my own GP, I've only really been able to let out a lot of detail of my situation with her slowly over time. It's worked pretty well that way, it seems. Not sure if any of this will help. You are certainly not alone in doing this. I hope we can encourage you to make the step towards getting there.

thank you @Mazarita I feel as though since I had the hospitalisation that the mh stuff is all anyone considers as important. i wish my old dr was still here...

Re: fear of something

How about finding a doctor by doing a Google search of the local area and just taking yourself off there without even mentioning the MI, @Former-Member? Sounds like your physical issue really needs to be given the priority just now.

where i live there are 2 main clinics - to get into one you can be a patient at the other whithout getting all your records transferred over etc. Theres a general shortage of gps here. A new place recently opened recently by a youngish indian dr but he's a parent of a child in a special program at my school and i dont feel like i could see him.

Re: fear of something

@Former-Member, I see the difficulty. I'd probably try the Indian doctor, though I know that's not ideal either. Other option is to just go ahead and get all your records transferred over to the second clinic. Sounds like it would be ideal to see a female doctor. On the other hand a new doctor with a new practice might be very fresh and attentive to looking after you. It looks like any way you turn there is some difficulty, but not insurmountable. Seems like you really need to see a GP, that's for sure.
