Happy Fathers Day to all the Dads we miss

Happy Fathers Day to all the Dads we miss

I miss you Dad and I'm angry that you left me - or I'm angry with the people who let you die, I don't know.

Happy Fathers Day!

Re: Happy Fathers Day to all the Dads we miss

Dear E,

For two years you embraced the idea of being my father-figure and you treated me just like one of your kids. You used to always call me "kiddo" and you promised me that I would always be your kid. And then you went on a holiday with a bunch of other church ministers and apparently the topic of me came up. You came home from that holiday and for the first time ever you were "too busy" to spend time with me. After this happened a second time, I asked you what was going on and you explained that you no longer felt it was ok for us to be so close. And thus my world stopped. I was eighteen years old.

The more you pushed me away, the more chaotic I became. At your insistence, I saw my very first therapist only a couple of months after you first pushed me away. I had my first psychiatric admission soon after. I started self harming and engaging in high risk behaviours such as reckless driving. I wanted to die.

On the 7th of August, 1997 you took out a restraining order against me. I attempted suicide the following month. The psychiatrists all told you that if you ceased all contact with me, I would get over my "fixation." Last week I sent you a Father's day card.

I love you E. I love you even though I sued you because of your gross mismanagement of the disclosure I made regarding the abuse I experienced in the church that you pastored. I have never stopped loving you. I know that you have moved house, and I know that very soon you will retire from the church. I don't know where you live and after you leave the church, I will have no way of finding you. But three times a year, on your birthday, Christmas and Father's Day, I will do as I did this week - I will send you a card care of the church. I won't put my return address on it, so it can never be sent back. I will never know if you receive them, but I will continue to send them every year until the day I die. I always put my em*il address and phone number inside the card, so that if per chance you want to make things right between us this side of eternity, you can. I love you.

Your loving kid, now and always,

Happy Father’s Day, Dad.

I miss you every day. I’m sorry your shoes were too big for me to fill. I’m sorry I’ve let you down.

I should be gone and you should still be here.
