rollercoaster of emotions, makes me feel like i'm going crazy (or already am...)

rollercoaster of emotions, makes me feel like i'm going crazy (or already am...)

to clairfy, 'crazy' isn't the right word maybe.... but I feel so many different emotions within the space of a week, day or even a few hours that it does feel like its DRIVING me crazy at the very least.

It's so hard to answer the question 'how are you?' because I don't think I actually ever know how I am or how I have been on any given day, I am too many different things always. Until I am nothing. If that makes any sense at all?

It's like I can't regulate my feelings and I have no idea where they come from. I could start the day feeling relatively okay - maybe even good - and then suddenly out of nowhere I feel incredibly sad like I am on the verge of tears and nothing is ever going to be better. Or I might feel adrenalised and energetic (sometimes in a good way, often in a bad way - anxious, panicky etc) and then suddenly I switch to feeling totally empty and numb. Disocnnected from myself and the world around me.

I know everyone experiences different emotions all the time but what gets me is how many I experience in a short amount of time and not being able to identify where they came from or where they went when they leave. It makes me feel like I have no control.

Does anyone else experience this and is there any advice anyone might be able to give as to at least try and be more aware of them if not more in control right away.....

Hi @louise94

I can totally understand how such conflicting moods swings in such a short space of time could make you feel like you are going crazy. Although you aren't it can be overwhelming and very bewildering when we don't know what is triggering the mood swings. To be able to manage it adequately we would need to find out what the triggers are;- the possible psychological/mental/emotional/physical disorders that are at play which symptoms are causing your mental anguish.

Have you seen your GP? A good place to start is to undergo a complete physical medical assessment (including hormone imbalance, thyroid, vitamin deficiencies, brain scan for possible tumors etc) to either rule out or treat any physical illness/deficiency together with a referral for a mental health assessment to cover all bases.

Have you recently gone through any major stress or trauma? This can also cause a chemical imbalance which would need to be diagnosised.

It can be trial and error in working out what is going on to obtain proper treatment. Professional medical advice is a must here with full knowledge of your medical history. Together with having a good support system around you to reach out when it gets a bit much - some find support groups very helpful.

What has helped me in the past is doing all the above and adhering to a healthy lifestyle, keeping my mind and body as busy as possible, and a very positive outlook to manage my illness and following treatment advice for any physical/mental disorder that was assessed . A course of anti-depressants for an 18mth period helped my anxiety but did trigger some mania - the type and dose was adjusted to suit. When on ADs for longer than the latter stated time, they did make me feel worse (side effects). I refused a mood stabiliser offered for personal reasons - but they help others if bi-polar is suspected. In that time I was on ADs I worked on my triggers/grief/physical disorders. It is a work in progress but am much better now with the ocassional relapse (due to stress/re-occurrence of some triggers).

When I had a breakdown it was a combination of a chemical imbalance, hormonal and thyroid imbalance, peri-menopause, past hurts and past abuse (and present from my daughter), which finally caught up with me together with ongoing major stressors and the big one - complicated grief.

Depression and MI is usually a combination of ills/triggers that are very individual to the sufferer. The more ills the more complex the mental distress. Keeping hope of a positive outcome and future I found was essential towards healing and management. Please keep posting and let us know how you are getting on. Hugs 🤗xx

Re: rollercoaster of emotions, makes me feel like i'm going crazy (or already am...)

@Former-Member thanks for taking the time to respond, i can see you really thought about you reply which is appreciated.

To answer your questions, yes I have recently seen my GP. I too have thought perhaps there was a phsycial cause adding to what's been going on for me but turns out I am in abolustely fine (better than) physical health. No vitamin deficencies, no problems with the thyroid or hormones or any other functions...
I have not undergone recent trauma no. I experienced some difficulties growing up that I never dealt with as a kid and have now had to face over the last few years and I do think these are a large part of why I am experiencing what I am right now. To give some insight in to me/my life ---

My mother was very young when she had be & a heroin addict, due to this she was not around a lot and neglected me (emotionally and physically) as a kid. She had her own traumas she was trying to escape from/deal with by using drugs and unfortunately just should not have had a child. She did try to get better but sadly passed away due to her addiction before that could happen. I was 5 years old at the time. My biological dad had his own problems with mental health & addiction and had been out of the picture since I was 3. I did not have any contact from him whatsoever until I was about 13 at which point he wrote to me and apologised/explained his absence. We wrote back and forth for a while and he asked to meet me but he too also passed away unexpectedly before this could happen.

I grew up with my grandparents (my biological mums parents) who though I now know and understand love me in their own way I had a difficult time growing up with. I never felt that I fit with them and was always worried that they were only looking after me out of obligation because I had no one else. My grandmother in particular was very cold growing up and things I couldnt understand as a kid/teenager just sent me the message that she didn't love me (she was dealing with grief and depression herself as a result of losing her daughter and another child a few years before that). They are also quite devout Jehovah's Witnesses which I was brought up to be part of as well but never felt I agreed with/belonged to. I left the faith when I was around 16 which just caused me to feel even more like an outsider to my family.

There have been other things that have happened along the way, I have struggled with mental health issues very severely over the years resulting in countless hospitalisations and inpatient admissions as a teenager/young adult. Now I have been out of hospital all together for over a year (maybe even almost 2) and to the outside eye probably more stable than ever.

Why am I explaining this? I guess just to give a bit of insight in to whats happened for me and to explain that mental health issues arent a new thing for me. I have seen many GP's, psychologists, psychiatrists and other health professionals which have all kept me 'alive' until this point I guess.... The weird thing is that now feels like the harder part. I realise that all the behaviours that lead me to be hospitalised in the past were just me avoiding feeling this stuff and actually dealing with how my childhood affected me. All those things were me trying NOT to feel. So now, I'm feeling everything. All the time.

I know this has been a really long post so anyone that has taken the time to read this, I applaud you haha. Thank you. I guess what I'm saying is that I kind of get why this is happening now but at the same time.... I don't know how to deal with it? It's so frustrating and sometimes I think maybe not feeling was easier... I know I can't run from my feelings forever but I just don't know how to manage them at all or even understand them sometimes.

Anyway, thanks again for anyone that took the time to read this...

Re: rollercoaster of emotions, makes me feel like i'm going crazy (or already am...)

Hi @louise94

I read your post with real interest and sincerely appreciate you sharing it. I can relate to what you are saying - although different circumstances, I am a survivor of childhood abuse. I also suppressed my emotions for years only having to deal with them in the same manner you describe. It was horrific really, a really hard time. And it took time to address them (I never thought I would stop crying at one stage), and although all individuals are different in the time it takes in the grieving process - in time the pain lessens and the moods do settle. As awful as it can feel like now it's a good thing that the grief is being allowed to be felt and now finally expressed so you can eventually let go of it - in your time, and the process of healing has now finally begun. Let yourself feel my friend, cry as much as you need to, talk as much as you need and don't suppress - then let it flow from you - one step and one day at a time.

Have you seen a grief/trauma counsellor? That may be worth considering for help to process the emotions of the past. I also found ironically keeping very busy helped as well so the emotions did not continually overwhelm me. I am better now but it is still a work in progress - perhaps I will never be totally free of the mental scars but in time I have learnt to express the pain in healthier ways and to move forward rather than those suppressed emotions keeping me stuck (feeling lost). Sending you warm hugs

Re: rollercoaster of emotions, makes me feel like i'm going crazy (or already am...)

@Former-Member Thank you for taking the time to read a bit about my story, and for your sincere reply ❤️ I am sorry to hear about your childhood and consequent struggles as well though it makes me incredibly glad to hear you have moved forward, even if you say you aren't totally free of the scars it left behind. I have to agree with you in that I'm not sure we ever will be. They are part of what makes us who we are I suppose, for better or for worse.

I suppose I find it difficult because I never thought of my childhood as 'traumatic'. I actually thought it was pretty average and normal for a very long time. Even now I know that it wasn't 'normal' but I find it difficult to describe it as 'traumatic'. I have a lot of trouble with how upset I get now as a result of it because a big part of me thinks that it doesn't warrant such emotions or that it shouldn't have affected me so much, that I should be able to just 'deal with it' and 'move on'. I know that I am being hard on myself by saying that and that those thoughts are probably part of what makes the feelings so difficult in a sense but it's really hard to view it in another way.

I haven't seen a grief/trauma counsellor specifically no but my psychologist is really quite brilliant. I guess like you said all I can really do is feel these feelings but it's just so frustrating. This has been the hardest year of my life (emotionally) but everyone thinks I am doing so much better than in the past because I am not visibly self destructing or in hospital. I feel like I won't ever stop feeling sad or alone. It's hard sometimes (often...).

I dont know, when you were going through your stuff did you sometimes find it hard to differentiate if what you were feeling was a result of this 'process' or if it was in response to a current event/situation?? Like sometimes I might be upset or feel fogotten or unimportant or something and I can't work out if it's tied to all 'this' stuff or something that's happened in my day to day life. Or if I have over reacted to a situation in my day to day life because of my past experiences and the feelings they bring up. Does this make sense??

Thanks again, sending a hug bag to you also ❤️

Hello dear @louise94

Your post makes total sense to me. Just popping in quickly to let you know that I can't reply in depth right now as I have my brother here overnight to entertain, but will do so when he goes home tomorrow afternoon. I have experienced a lot of what you are going through and will go more into detail tomorrow. It's very refreshing to be able to talk so openly and honestly and the insight you have into your own condition is a good sign for future healing. Will talk more soon. xx

Re: rollercoaster of emotions, makes me feel like i'm going crazy (or already am...)

Hi @louise94

Sorry for the late reply, my brother didn't leave until late last night.

Sounds like you have a great psychologist! Keep on with her for sure - perhaps if you feel comfortable, ask her for help with dealing with grief from the past.

One thing I have experienced in life is that we are more likely to self destruct when we suppress emotions, suppress grief (thinking "just deal with it"), and suppressing expression of trauma (not talking about it). In a lot of ways you are doing better because you are gaining insight into why you are feeling the way you are and you "are talking about it and discussing it/dealing with it in healthier ways". This is painful at first but will free yourself up more to move forward better. Two steps forward, one step back, three steps forward, two steps back and so forth. Not always smooth but making progress where before the suppressed pain was controlling and becoming overwhelming leading to self destruction. You are making progress.

It is very painful at first (hence why we suppress it in the first place) but it's allowing the grief/emotional pain to be released. When we suppress the inner pain just grows and comes out in other ways - e.g. Self loathing. Anxiety, lack of trust, anxiety, depression, over sensitivity, low self esteem etc. Once we deal with our grief/emotions and work on letting them go over time - then it comes to "not looking back ever but forward" (not to be re-triggered or held back by past hurts). It is a work in progress. And nothing worthwhile is ever easy, just worth the effort.

We are very resilient as children and our minds can't always process the adverse happenings around us. So we "block" and numb ourselves from the emotions, pain and trauma. This is a good survival instinct at the time but when that numbing wears off it the resulting trauma or emotional pain etc will come from the sub concious to be dealt with and/or insight will develop that those traumas have something to do with what triggers our emotions now. And it does if it was not dealt with at the time. Numbing is good to survive at the time but it stops us later on from fully feeling (the good things too, joy etc), and stops us living life in its entirety with all,it's ups and downs. Issues develop.

Your insight into this is a good thing, giving you resources to work on such triggers with your psychologist. And to allow yourself to properly grieve your childhood, your loneliness in it, your losses/grief and the way you felt "not valued" or important at the time. The latter is why you may over-react now - self worth and confidence took a blow when our minds and emotions were developing as children and this will shape how we cope with life as adults. We are all unique and the above is just a baseline. Use what you feel is possibly releveant in your circumstances and what you can take from this to improve your quality of life and control over your mood fluctuations. Sometimes other factors can be present which will take Self exploration looking within.

The above is a small part of what I have experienced. And have found personally once we work through these issues and "grow in confidence and self belief" the less these emotions and the past will control stopping us from our personal goals and path in life that leads to inner growth and a more fulfilling existence. The battle is not allowing the pain/moods to control us - but us to control it in time moving forward as we do.

I hope this has helped and that your day is a good one. Hugs 🤗 xx

Re: rollercoaster of emotions, makes me feel like i'm going crazy (or already am...)

Hi @louise94

im so sorry its take me so long to reply! Your latest post bumped it up for me!

I understand those feelings of being driven crazy all too often. It is quite annoying isnt it?

I often feel the same way when im asked how I am as its ever changing and never stays the same, or theres so much going on its hard to identify just the one feeling. This is all making perfect sense 🙂

like you and @Former-Member I use to suppress all my feelings and up to this point it seemed everything was fine but I realised it wasnt and I think its really brave that you have been already seeking the help you have been and stuck with it also. it doesnt really help to supress these sorts of things even if you only to speak to one person, its better than bottling it up.

Im hearing you about the trauamtic and hardships of childhood. I too grew up with a younger mother who didnt really want me and so I spent most of my time with my grandparents. Im sorry you had a hard childhod also. Like you I thought my childhood was a normal experience until I took a look from the outside and relaised just how different I was to other kids and now adults my age. I find it hard to relate to others my own age due to my upbringing and ongoing traumatic experiences.

As overtheedge has said grief is a long term process and each person deals with it properly. Im really glad that you have your psychologist. They sound really great and supportive which is the best thing for you. So im really glad that you have these people off the forums that you can speak to as well.

Your last bit of your post where your describing the difficulties to differentate what is normal in regards to these circumstances I find hard and still find hard to do. A lot of your past experiences despite you not thinking they are trauamtic as such will affect you and how you see the world and the way you react to things.

I remember you saying on another thread you think you might have BPD. Some of these things your describing sound similar to what I experience with BPD. Such as the over reacting to certain things, being left out, rollercoaster of emotions is a big one also.

@Sans911 @MDT maybe you guys could help?
