Got the shakes
Does anyone else get the shakes from their mood stabiliser medication?
If so, how did you cope with it? Anyone got tips and tricks to cope with fine tremors?

Yeah me too. More so after physical exertion. Sorry no ideas to help. Funny yesterday when I asked my significant other to check for a splinter in my finger. Shaking a bit and one by one grabbed all my fingers. It stopped then!

@Former-Member, it's not the shakes. But, either from the mood stabiliser or the anti-psychotic, I get occasional involuntary jerks of my arm or leg. Sometimes jolts like that in bed as I'm falling asleep through my whole body. It's full on for the time but they are only occasional and momentary. These to me are the most troublesome side effect of these meds. I'm scared of it getting worse as I get older. I get it less the healthier I am physically and the more exercise I'm getting.

I think I'm going to have to bring it up with my psych..... I'm not sure if it's anxiety or the Li or something else. It's just that for uni I do a lot of stuff that needs fine motor skills in the laboratory and it's really hard to get my work done.
Funnily enough I've always suffered from a kind of involuntary jerk that i get when tired or if I've been sitting still too long or watching sport on tv. It doesn't worry me much (had it all my life) but it's awkward to explain to people around me when it happens. My doctor says it's related to the restless legs syndrome that I suffer from. Do you get restless legs?

I get restless all over fairly regularly, @Former-Member. But, yes, sometimes at occasional moments, my legs get very restless while trying to sit or be in bed. What worries me about my jerks is that they came on after starting anti-psychotic and the med I am taking is known to be a risk for tardive dyskinesia. Really don't want that. Good idea to bring it up with your doctor or psychiatrist.

I understand what you are going through. Shakes and tremors can be troublesome. For me it effected my body and my self esteem.
My mood stabliser hasn't given me any shakes, but it's best to check with your mental health professional and/or doctor. You maybe sensitive to the medication.
When I was on an anti-pyschotic medication it gave me the tremors, which is similar to shakes. I had to research into my own anti-pyschotic medication to suite my physiology. I had to check the fact sheets on the medications to find out what side affects they could cause. Then to avoid those side-affects I found something that was more suitable and asked my mental health professionals if I could try it. Since the change I have had no more tremors.
In regards to dealing with tremors/shakes whilst on medication. I had to limit my activities. So whilst I still did them, I only did them for a shorter amount of time. It is frustrating because they can't be controlled, they are involuntary movements. Try find a method that works best for you. I use to find that hiding body parts under the table when out for lunch helped as it meant that it wasn't as noticable.
Ask your mental health professionals what side affects are common for your medication and have a chat with them if you can find something that might be more suitable and still benefit your mental health.
