Does it ever go away

Does it ever go away

Hey guys
I just want to know i see alot people say they have had depression for years and years. I am wondering does it ever go away or once you have it it will always follow you around? I have only recently had it and i hope it goes away with counselling otherwise i dont see the point. Well there is no point really of it is always going to be there.

Hi @Cookie42

It sounds like you are trying to get a really good understanding about what depression is like for you and your experience of it. I think this is great as we are all on our own journey and yes some parts of our story may overlap with others experiences but acknowledging what's happening for ourselves is very important.

I wish I could offer you a formula of what the depression is and will be moving forward but I can't.

Sometimes talking with a mental health professional around what is helpful for you in supporting yourself now can be useful. The SANE Help Centre can be contacted on 1800 187 263 or via the online chat if you would like to explore this further between the hours of 9am-5pm Monday to Friday.

It's great to hear you are seeing a counsellor I'm wondering if you are also linked in with a GP? You sound very proactive in searching for recovery and that's really graet to hear.

How are things for you at the moment? Thank you for posting and reaching out.

There's lots of great support here 🙂

Re: Does it ever go away

Hi @Cookie42,

My personal view is that depression is treatable and in that sense it can go away. The challenge is finding the right support. It seems that at this particular point in history, psychology/counselling is very much about teaching people "coping strategies." These can be super helpful in helping someone to cope...but they don't in and of themselves actually heal. If all a person is ever given is coping strategies, then all they will ever do is cope. From my perspective, actually treating depression involves addressing whatever underlying issues are driving the depression. This very much varies from person to person and thus there is no single solution.

I guess what I'm saying is that in my view, yes, in theory depression can be healed, but in practice, finding the right support to help heal it is a super challenge.

ts just so up and down. One day i think ok i am fine and next i am so sad. I am getting to root of it with my psychologist even though i know what it is and i get it all takes time but i dont know why it has manifested into now when it was as a child. Also i worry about how i will pay for the psychologist once the 10 visits are up. I mean i go fortnightly and it cost $50 each time but once that mental health plan is finished it will be $170 which would be hard to find so i dont know if i should just give up now as its too hard😕

Re: Does it ever go away

@Cookie42 It is great that you are getting to the root of the problem with your psychologist, but I can totally hear your angst around money. You are right in thinking that realistically, the issue is unlikely to be resolved in ten sessions. The ten-session thing makes me super cranky because really, only the most minor of issues can be meaningfully addressed in that sort of time frame.

I wonder if it might be worth talking to your psychologist about any other funding you may be eligible for. For example, I am currently receiving funded sessions through the NSW victims of crime program. I only heard about this program after going to the Royal Commission into child sexual abuse, despite the fact I have been dealing with mental health services for about twenty years. This makes me wonder what other funding there might be out there for people in various situations across the various states of the country.

As to why your stuff is manifesting now when it relates to something that happened when you were a child, this is a very common experience. I don't really know why - the brain is a mysterious thing. However, you are certainly not alone in experiencing this.

I'm really pleased that you have discovered the forums @Cookie42. I hope you find them as supportive as I do.

Re: Does it ever go away

yes It does go away! I have come to a point where you appear to be when mine was related to childhood stuff. I kind of spent a lot of time trying to work it out. Along with depression I had dissociative identity disorder and 19 different personality parts. After years of therapy and trying to find endless ways of finding free counselling (ending up through victims of crime counselling). I have just had a hospital stay. Not because I was unwell (private hospital) but because my life has drastically changed as I got better (& merged my 19 parts back into me) and I'm learning how to deal with life as a "normal" person! It was not until I sorted out the lies I believed about myself as a child (like I'm not worth it, I'm useless, hopeless, I don't matter) that were following me into every aspect of my adult life, did I start getting better. I didn't realise I was looking at my adult life through the eyes of that wounded little girl and kind of re-living my childhood reactions with people in my life. I didn't trust them, so I treated them like they would hurt me! I can now say I can see SO MUCH freedom coming it's almost overwhelming in itself. I've been out of hospital 3 days. The staff knew me from before and all truly believe I'm at the end of the horrid journey and am becoming more free! Please believe me there is hope. But it takes A HUGE amount of bravery and work on your part to recover. I won't lie!! Face the pain, don't run away!!! I'm not on any medication anymore (with my drs approval of course)! Please hang in there!!!! There's a reason it's come up now!

Re: Does it ever go away

See today i feel great and i am thinking maybe i dont need to go back psychologist . I hate going and bringing things up that i dont want to think about.

Re: Does it ever go away

Then sadly your depression may just keep returning. You can't keep running forever. The more you see the psych, the less intrusive it will be. I know it's hard but PLEASE believe me it works. When you feel good is the exact time you need to go because you will learn more coping strategies for the bad days! Because there will be bad days....for every person on the planet!

Re: Does it ever go away

But the thing is the psych cant change the past. What has happen happen. She cant change that. I cant change that. And i dont want to be brought back to that. I dont want to remember that why i buried it. I have my own coping techniques that are working. I will just have run faster. I think you cant change 20 odd years so why should i try. I have coped so far execpt for hiccup. Back to it now

Re: Does it ever go away

100% correct. The past cannot be changed but if you're needing to run faster then obviously the past is not staying in the past. If you can be happy with leaving the past there, being able to remember it without trauma, horror or fear or huge emotional pain, then I wish you all the best. I just know I believed lies about myself that kept giving me intense ongoing hiccups. I needed to do it. This was a 25 year process of trying to leave it behind but I got exhausted from running and ran out of places to run which nearly ended my life! Yes my past is unpleasant 23 years of abuse but no more! I look forward to EVERY SINGLE DAY where I know I'm not running anymore!
