What happens when your support ends?

What happens when your support ends?

A question I have been pondering for the past several months now - What happens when the relationship you had with a primary carer ends?

In my case, I had been in a 5 and a half year relationship, which had become rocky, and then finally ended recently. The thing is, she was also my main supoort person/carer who I would rely on for different things, it helped me to cope immensely and I have since lost this along with the relationship.

Things like getting around to new places alone, being out and about etc all terrify me, but they're "normal" for everyone else.

Hi @Mortiis,

I'm sorry your relationship hasn't worked out. I know how tough a break up can be. I have similar problems to you with getting out of the house and needing support with things due to lack of some basic life skills. I don't have easy answers to your problem but have found this forum helpful as a place to talk with others in similar situations, helping us feel less isolated.

It sounds like you are managing to feed yourself at least, which is great. I think if I was in your shoes I'd be trying to identify and strengthen my support network. Even just writing down the names of people who might have a care for you in the world could be helpful. When I've done that in the past I've been surprised that there are probably more than I thought. Do you have a doctor or therapist you see regularly? Are you able to access any local council assistance programs?

What I've written may be off the mark as I don't know many details of what's happening for you. If nothing else, I'm listening and sending well wishes.

Maz

Hi there Maz,

thanks so much for replying to me. I do have a Spectrum worker, which is the only other suport I have. I had Neami support too, but their support was extremely limited and not really focused on me.

I'm not eating well at all, really, been 2-3 days or so at a time without eating, so I guess I need help with that kind of thing. I know local council does things such as Meals on Wheels (which I have to wait over three weeks to recieve apparently because the menus were screwed up), but I am not sure how much help that is going to be.

@Mortiis,

Here are some possibilities:

  • Internet grocery shopping might be an option for you.
  • I would probably do Meals on Wheels or even a commercial provider of diet meals.
  • If you can get out, shopping at the supermarket and having it home delivered if you don't have a car.
  • If you are not managing the cooking well at all, buy things that are super simple to make or require almost no preparation (raw fruit and veges, bread and cheese, breakfast cereal).
  • Take-away home delivery.

Some of this might be far from the ideal nutritional plan but, in your current situation, I'd be working on the idea that eating something is better than eating nothing. I'd encourage you to keep nourishing yourself so that you can feel better emotionally too.
