My friend battling alcohol addiction what goes through their mind when they finally meet a friend that support them?

My friend battling alcohol addiction what goes through their mind when they finally meet a friend that support them?

I have a friend who is battling alcohol addiction. They want to tackle this addiction, but at the same time they do not, and they are also on medication to treat their addiction. I have so far done social activities such as sports, reading together and even movie night at my place, which have not included alcohol. The reason for this is that I have already set that boundary up for them by telling them that all the things we do will not include alcohol, and as a friend, I will always support them. I realised with this friend that I will need to be patient with them, because it will be up to them to fix their problem. I have already given them a lot of advice, such as attending the AA meeting, and I have not asked for any promises and only told them I am here for them whenever they need me. I understand that, as a friend, I can't fix this addiction of theirs, and it will be up to them; the best I can do is reach out.

Although they want to reach out, they also want to isolate and push people away. Sometimes I do not hear from them after a while, which I know is due to their battles and missing their medication to treat their addiction. I have told them they should reach out. The thing is that it does feel like they have no other friend besides me who is supporting them, and the friends they have at the moment are bad and, in fact, enabling them. After all, we are in our 30s, and it can be hard to find friends who support you, especially as an adult, and we basically ran into each other by chance. My question is what goes through their mind when they have finally met a friend who is supporting them and shows them that you can have a good time without alcohol.

The alcohol addiction has negatively impacted them so much that it has hurt their family the most. Since we have just reconnected, I realised this will be a slow process. Any advice people can give is great. Thank you. I am trying to learn about this alcohol addiction.

You're a good friend @Candlelight204 .

Please don't be too disappointed if your friend is in denial at times, it can be part of the picture.

I try to support a family member who has other diagnoses and it can be a thankless task. I guess I often feel in standby mode as they do have crises from time to time. I worry about them and want to help as much as they'll let me.
