My future idk

My future idk

I’m now becoming an adult, turning 18-20, and I’m still not happy with what I ‘want’ to do and how my futures planned out. For as long as I’ve known, I’ve always loved music and musicals. I’ve been given lessons for piano and for every year of high school, I’ve done music and now have earnt my music certificate. But that’s all I really have, my knowledge in music theory, piano skills, and very weak vocal skills. I’ve always wanted to be in musical theatre and have so many characters I want to play, but my mother won’t let me reach and further. She has been supportive at the start when I was younger but after a few years into high school, my love for music stopped being as supported. My whole family is about sport, she will show everyone’s achievements off but mine. Just finishing school, I want to do vocal lessons, I’m so used to doing music every year and day of my life so without something I just don’t feel right. My mother shuts down the idea immediately and doesn’t want me doing anymore. When I would talk to her about musical theatre she’d always remind me that I won’t get far and now that I’m at the point where I need to choose a career, I don’t think I’ll ever be happy with anything. I’ve studied psychology and human bio, but I just don’t think I’m going to make it far. I rlly don’t know what to do, I have no access to anything atm and lost all my connections

Hi @strange_unusual

Welcome to the forums

I'm hearing how difficult it is not having your mum support your passions for music and musical theatre. That can be really upsetting not to have those around you support your dreams or interests, particularly at this trick stage of life where you're entering adulthood. It's a really confusing time and often comes with that real pressure to know what career you want to go into, as you mentioned your mum starting to push this too.

Is it possible to pursue musical theatre without your mum's support? Are there any past teachers or classmates who you might be able to reach out to for ideas - I know you mentioned not having any connections at the moment, is that connections within that space or more generally?
