Navigating grief and loss

Dating after loss

Dating after loss

How soon is it ok to date someone after death of a long term partner?

I already have and I haven’t felt guilty about the chemistry and physical connection I had with someone I met, I have full disclosure of my situation (below)

Ok I am post 6 weeks since my partner died from cancer, for 3 months before that she was effectively bed ridden and required almost 24 hour a day care at home primarily from me.

for 2 months prior to that she was in and out of hospital from various complications and tests and treatment.

our relationship of nearly 17 years lost all romantic connection the day before her medical ordeal started in November last year.

i knew she was going to pass away, but I was overwhelmed by the death and between her passing and her funeral it was damn tough and I sought help

to add to all this I have a 5.5yo son and my mother in law lives with us

Hi @Moozey7399

I just wanted to welcome you to the forums, and share that I'm sorry for your recent loss.

This is a difficult question to ask, and it's understandable that you'd be looking for some guidance from the community, navigating loss and life after loss is often a confusing time. It may be one of these things where there is no right or wrong answer. Every relationship is different and everyone's grieving process is unique, all we can do is try to follow what feels right to us.

It's clearly quite a complex situation with your son and mother-in-law also involved, so I wonder if there is anyone in your life who you could talk to about this - a friend or family member who can help you talk it through who has some knowledge of the situation?

6 weeks!

It hurts, and will for a long time.

Thankfully you have her mum and your son. Mum will be empty and your boy (entirely lost) will always look at you through her eyes. So take comfort that you share the most important things she left behind (including you).

Your comment "our relationship of nearly 17 years lost all romantic connection the day before her medical ordeal started in November last year"; sounds off. I take it, it became too painful (due to the cancer) to even cuddle. My response? Fu** God! She's such a bit*h!.

My advice, looking back after 18 years. Take your boy for a long trip somewhere. Kiss mum, and use the space to separate the time - after the person who taught you what love means - and before the one who might fill her space.

(be careful)

The little lad has been so amazing, because he had to gravitate to me for such a period of time he hasn’t shown any outward signs of distress, I have his teachers and school chaplain looking out for him
