Managing thoughts of suicide & self-harm

Finding it harder to manage thoughts of suicide

Finding it harder to manage thoughts of suicide

For the last few months I have been struggling with thoughts of not wanting to be alive, worthlessness and ongoing grief from the death of my son two years ago. Recently though it’s been getting harder to cope; I have found myself withdrawing from family and friends, having trouble sleeping, I seem to want to eat constantly (which is making me feel even worse!) and feeling so emotional! I have been having thoughts of suicide even though I know it would hurt people in my life and my cats. I have seen a psychologist before a few years back but not sure I want to do that again. I am not sure I want to tell my GP that either even though I know she would have heard it all before. I noticed this morning that there are a lot of resources on this site which I will read through later today. I am not sure why I am posting this other than wanting to share how I am feeling with someone as I can’t face telling people in my life that I am feeling the way I feel! I am hoping for some connection with others struggling in a similar way and how they cope.

Hi @Keli,

Glad that you've been able to share what's going on with us. It can be really hard to hold on to everything and keep it locked inside, even if it feels like that's the safest thing for us to do. I hope just by typing it out it's helped you to feel a little lighter.

There's no timeline for grief. Everyone moves through it in their own way in their own time. It sounds like things are feeling really heavy for you right now, and that you're sitting with some scary thoughts too. If the suicidal thoughts ever get really loud or intense, please do reach out to a crisis service, like one of the following:

Lifeline: Phone - Call 13 11 14

Chat – Visit https://www.lifeline.org.au/crisis-chat/

Suicide Callback Service: Phone – Call 1300 659 467

Chat – Visit https://www.suicidecallbackservice.org.au/

For some ongoing support, you could look into our Recovery Club program:

https://www.sane.org/recovery-club

I hope you can continue to reach out in this community and connect with others who may relate to what you're going through. If you're not ready to talk to your GP or seek further psychologist support that's okay! It might be something to consider in the future if you continue to feel stuck and/or overwhelmed by what you're experiencing. Everything in its own time :)

I wish you the best on your journey.

Hi @Keli, you may want to consider asking for a peer mentor (another bereaved parent) to speak too in mutually agreed ongoing contacts: https://www.ladybirdcare.org.au/peer-mentoring

Re psychologists, it's important to keep trying different ones until you find one you "click" with. There a good ones and bad ones.
