Something’s not right

Rampaging hormones

Rampaging hormones

Hi I’m SunWolfMoon I’m 19, ftm (pre T) and have been diagnosed with Graves’ disease for a few months now and it’s started to affect my hormone level. The doctors and specialists have given me medicine to take and whilst it’s helping the disease stop progressing it’s shooting my hormone levels up which basically drops a bomb on my emotional state. (Essentially going through puberty again as my doctor described except I’m 19 and have a job, a family member to look after and so many animals and friends I need to be there for instead of just looking out for myself like I did at 13+)

Ive been managing for a while now but currently am struggling with containing my emotions. For context my emotions at the moment have been haywired, I feel angry much easier, jealousy at the slightest hint of someone else, I feel sad or a looming sense of dread when I’m not around my support people (my partner and my friends which I call my family), I feel overwhelming happiness and giggly when I’m with my support people and the romantic love I have for my partner I feel so clingy and like I want to tell him how much I love him everyday (which I’m not sure whether that’s normal or not because I haven’t felt like that with anyone before). He’s more than happy that I’m so lalalaaaa with him but I’m scared. I don’t feel lots of emotions as a person due to trauma during childhood, I’m not used to feeling so many things especially not at the intensity the hormones are making me feel them. I’ve talked to my friends and my partner they all understand and are so supportive of me but how do I deal with the mental strain it takes on myself?

I feel so overwhelmed by all these emotions and find myself having a short ability to deal with the bad stuff in my life. I find myself practically ignoring it or doing it and telling those around me to shut up while I do what they want me to do or I find myself unable to do it.

I’m also diagnosed with Autism ADHD Anxiety and Depression so I’m not sure if those have anything to tie into it.

Kind of rant / just sick of feeling so weird in my own self I hate new things and this is a new thing so it makes it worse 😞

p.s thankyou for the resources I’ve been pointed towards! They are definitely very helpful :))

Hey there @SunWolfMoon

I can see that your recent diagnosis of Graves disease has been difficult to adjust to with it affecting your hormones and emotional state. It sounds as though these emotional changes have been particularly tricky to manage especially with having so many people (and animals) who rely on you. You mention that this has escalated a lot of emotions which your not really used to feeling at this scale, that does sound quite tricky to navigate. Its understandable your feeling overwhelmed by it all and are avoiding things that take the mental energy that you just dont feel you have space for right now!

Its amazing that you have so many great supports in your life, at tricky times like this they can be really helpful. For additional support, you can always check out either lifeline or beyond blue as they can offer you a one on one space to talk through these challenges and some potential coping skills or strategies!

Hey @SunWolfMoon

That sounds like a really rough situation to be in. You have so many responsibilities that require your attention. Please be kind to yourself and remember you are doing the best you can. I hope in time the feeling will feel less overwhelming as you adjust. It’s great that you have support from both your partner and your chosen family. Childhood trauma really stunts your emotions. Do you have any grounding rituals or activities? I found colouring and meditation to be calming. They may not solve the problem, but they can certainly calm the storm. I wish you the best of luck. This community is here to support you.
