Struggling with anger and hurt

Struggling with anger and hurt

Hello,

I'm really struggling a lot with my family. It's so complicated and I feel lost in my family because no one seems to understand where I'm coming from or even my levels of empathy and compassion.

My mother is emotionally abusive and most likely has undiagnosed BPD due to extensive trauma and emotional neglect/ abandonment by her parents as well as being physically disabled so has lived with awful pain from the day she was born. Her own father was also, now days, we would say both emotionally and physically abusive.

So she has had a lot to deal with in her life but she also believes that there isn't anything wrong with her and has never acknowledged her trauma so because of that she's filled with a lot of insecurity, trust issues etc. So, my sister and I and my father has always had emotional abuse from her. Being told that we're arseholes, selfish, stupid etc on a daily basis. (I'm no longer living in the same country as them).

What I've been struggling with is that my older sister has gotten away with so much more- the rest of the family (my brother and my father) always say that she had it worse, and we both had the same abuse. The difference is that I handled it differently, why, I don't know. But also, if I overreact with my mum or whatever, my dad would always call me out on it, to say that wasn't right. And I get that. But my sister never had that. I've had times where my sister has said nasty stuff and I've reacted and my dad then has a go at me for defending myself.

My dad has always been blinded by my sister and my aunt, his sister, has pointed out that she can be incredibly selfish and entitled, which she can be. She's living with my parents with her two young children. She hasn't had a job for years and basically leeches of them and yet whenever someone points out her position she then plays the victim card. My dad has only just recently started to wake up to the fact that my sister can be wrong and because for the first time in her twenty+ years, she's been called out on her crappy behaviour by her father, she's reacting badly.

I have a lot of empathy for my mother and what she went through in her life. And I have learnt now that doesn't make what I went through, the abuse from her any less validating. It's just that I can separate my shit from hers. But my sister has always had allowances made for her. She's six years older than I am. And I've been very interesting in psychology in my life and have studied mental health, so I sometimes think that our roles in a dysfunctional family have switched. She behaves like the youngest child and I behave like the eldest daughter.

I have empathy for my sister too. I understand what's like to go through the abuse- we had the same. Being filled with chronic anxiety, self-hatred, insecurity, a lack of self-belief and confidence. Generally thinking that you weren't going to amount to anything... I get it.

My parents from a young age, depended on me for emotional support and I often feel responsible for pretty much everyone in my life and the older I get the more I realise that isn't true. But my parents are visiting at the moment and it just brings everything back up again. And I end up really struggling.

As well as the caretaker role that I had in my family, I was also the invisible child. They would come to me to seek support and then whenever I said something that they didn't agree with, I was told that I didn't know anything. And was so easily dismissed. I feel angry, confused, tired and over it. I want to cut ties but I care too much. :( No one from the family seems to validate or understand what I went through and how much the family relies on me. I don't know what to do.

Hi @FeelingStuck

You seem very insightful, and your approach to your difficult life has helped you develop wisdom over the years.

As a start, I'm wondering if it would be helpful to consider what is within your control vs what is outside of your control?

Please let us know your thoughts.

@Radder Thanks for responding.

I've tried that... But it doesn't seem to work. I think it's because I feel a combination of wanting to fix the problems as well as needing too. I know that I can't fix everything. But it can be hard letting go. When I have distance from them, it's easier. But whenever I spend time with them physically, it brings it up which is often why I only see them once or twice a year for short periods. Maybe writing it down and having two lists side by side, what's in my control and what's not might help.

Re: Struggling with anger and hurt

@FeelingStuck yes it's not easy, especially face-to-face when your nervous system reacts before your cognitive logic can judge ability to control a situation or argument. It's like any exercise, it's hard at first but if you persist it becomes "muscle memory".

Perhaps Relationships Australia may have some information and support that works for you. https://www.relationships.org.au

Growing up in that environment can be very impactful. Have you ever had counselling to help unpack that? Perhaps unresolved underlying impacts are making the current struggle harder?

Re: Struggling with anger and hurt

@FeelingStuck I can relate to many things you write about. Sounds like space and keeping your own pathway are important.

Its no easy feat to separate out the different bits of shit in a complicated family dynamic. Congratulations that you find empathy and can see beyond your own needs, but dont deny them. The journey of being a decent human is huge. I just wanted to send support.

Re: Struggling with anger and hurt

@Radder . I have had therapy about it. But it's so expensive so haven't been able to go :( .

I have studied mental health and trauma so I understand the logic side of it. The emotional side is what I struggle with. I tend to get better and feel better when I have little contact with them.

Thanks for the link! I'll check it out :)

@Appleblossom Thanks for the response.

It can be really hard and no family are perfect, just some are a lot more complicated than others.

Re: Struggling with anger and hurt

I think more anger and pain has come to the surface this time because I've noticed how both my parents have always been supportive my brothers music career. They'd talk about his accomplishments with people or share promotional work on their Facebook pages. They do they same with my sister's jewellery. But they never have done that with my creative writing. I've been published internationally and I am a good writer. They've just never showed the support or interest in it the way they have with my sibling's outlets. And I struggle with that. Not just because it hurts, but because I still want them to notice... :(

Re: Struggling with anger and hurt

Hi @FeelingStuck, yes we can use our higher-level cognition to understand the logic side, but our emotions tend to come from our much faster-to-react subconscious nervous system side that has been subjected to years of "fight or flight" defensive triggering to deal with perceived threats that override our higher level slower cognitive responses.

Mindfulness and grounding techniques that work on our bodily sensations can help retrain our subconscious to a new safer environment.

Re: Struggling with anger and hurt

Hi @feelingstuck I think our posts crossed over - my last one was a reply to yours about logic.

Re your latest post, yes it is very painful when we don't get the parental approval we all seek and our siblings get it instead. It's often a feeling of injustice, unfairness and an unmet need for validation.

Unfortunately, it's a feeling that arises from something beyond our control.

The question is, what do you want to do with such a feeling? A few possible options:

  • Nothing. Continue to mitigate the feeling by maintaining distance, and dealing with the pain when it arises through grounding.
  • Discuss it with your parents. As a parent of adult children myself, I know I often think I'm doing the right thing but I'm misreading the situation or missing something. I'm only human too, and we keep learning about life (hopefully) at every age and stage. However, such discussions need to be handled delicately and can backfire.
  • Focus on building self-esteem and reduce the need for external validation. Often we can only get fulfilment and satisfaction by observing the positive effects of our efforts.
  • Other ways forward??

You have spoken of having high level of empathy and compassion, even for your family members who are the source of your angst, despite having grown up in a difficult environment. You are an accomplished international author and have studied mental health. I'm impressed, and I'm sure others in this forum are too.

The frustration of being unable to "fix" things is natural, but perhaps consider:

1/ You can't fix something that is outside your control.

2/ When it comes to other humans, it's often better to listen, ask questions, and empower them to think through situations - we are all more invested in ideas were come up with ourselves than being told to do something that doesn't feel right for us.

I'd be interested in your thoughts.

Re: Struggling with anger and hurt

@Radder Thanks again for responding. :) . And thanks for the other links as well, I'll check them out.

I have tried speaking to my parents but my father struggles to hear if he's screwed up and my mother believes she was the most perfect mother in the world.

The answer to your question about what I want to do with the feeling is that I'll continue to keep my distance and I think not even mention anything to do with my writing to them. I have realised that I have other people in my life who will support me about it.

I think a lot of people really struggle with the ideology of parents/ family. It's actually very highly exaggerated. I think we often excuse shit behaviour or unkindness because they are your parents or family.

If someone mentions: Hey, this person treated me badly, always put me down and made me feel crap about myself. Others would say that's awful. Get rid of them. But as soon as someone says this person was my mum, or dad, or sibling or family member. You often hear: They are your family or blood is thicker than water.

I think I really struggle because I'm naturally a family and relationship orientated person- but when you've experienced the people in your life who are supposed to support you, love you, nurture you but do the opposite- it can be far more challenging. There's certainly a grieving process involved- and I'm still very much grieving.

I didn't understand trauma or childhood trauma and how it can manifest until I studied mental health and a paper on childhood development. That was only a couple of years ago. So I'm still trying to sift through twenty years of trauma. I need to be kinder to myself and start to put myself first which is why I'm working on an application to study creative writing.

Sorry for the large rant.
