Loving with my partners ADHD

Loving with my partners ADHD

I'm reaching out for advice. My partner has severe ADHD unmedicated and I believe undiagnosed mental health. I'm trying so hard to support him being diagnosed and being medicated which he's so blaze about. His energy and moods are through the roof all day and all night. I'm mentally exhausted. He often doesn't treat me like a partner, but wants to be bros. He gets ridiculously excited about the most crudest insensitive delicate topics. Goes on and on and on. I try to politely calm him down, but he doesn't stop until I literally walk away and close myself in the bedroom. I want to keep supporting him but I honestly don't know how much more my own mental health can take.

Hi @shellie2879

Welcome to the forums. It sounds like you’ve been trying really hard to support your partner while also reaching a point where you’re feeling mentally exhausted yourself. It’s completely understandable that you’re struggling when you feel like your own needs and boundaries are getting pushed aside

You can care about your partner and want the best for him without having to carry everything for him. It’s okay to set boundaries around what you’re able to listen to or be around, and to step away when you need some space to look after yourself.

You might also find it helpful to talk with someone you trust or a counsellor about what you’re experiencing and what boundaries might feel manageable for you

I hope you find the forums a supportive space, and that connecting with others here helps you feel a little less alone in this

Thankyou so much for your time in replying. I'm going to do some more research on how to support myself and my partner with positive boundaries.
